I like this site. Pre is my hero, he is my best athlete out of all athletes b/c he inspired me by his talent of running. I run Cross Country and I was real bad, but when I heard about him, read his book, and watched his movie "Without Limits" I started unning 5-6 miles a day to increase my running endurance. I never knew of pre until I watched the movies about him. But know I am inspired by his competitiveness and pure attitude to succeed. I am also saddened by his early passing, it is such a waste that steve could not inspire and/or teach others to greatness But one thing is for sure, steve prefontaine will never be gone from our hearts and minds. It would be safe to say that he is still inspiring lots of runners who go out on there daily runs and have those inner races, you know what i'm talkin' about, and hink of of pre never giving up and saying to yourself, pre would do anything to trade places with us right now. Hello Pre Fans . . . If someone were to ask me who my personal favorite athlete was in my life, and who I most admired most it would be Steve Prefontaine. I want so much to share my experiences of 'growing up' so to speak with the legend that Steve Prefo taine is and always will be . . . I was born and raised in Eugene, Oregon; the most dynamic track & field community in the country . . . I have several experiences that are special to me about Pre, and the impact he made on my life . . . I was a overachie ing, restless, want-to-be athlete as a youth who was magnitized to every achievment Pre strove for and conquered as were the people of Eugene . . . he truly was the 'James Dean' of track and field, and I had several opportunities to sit in Hayward Field s ands, and watch him blister Stevenson's Track with several sub-4 miles, and record times in the 5k and 10k . . . I watched as a youth Pre gather an almost rock star following in Eugene, sellout track meets ador his every hi speed kick, his long hair draft ng every runner behind him and his defiance to an intolerable AAU organization which was the demise of international competition for American athletes . . . I was in 8th grade, the summer he graced Sports Illustrated running along the river edge in Eugene and the whole world new this was something special . . . I remember running to the store to buy that special copy. I would ride my bike to Stevensons Track and sit in the stands, jog the warmup lap, watching him do his workouts, mesmerizing the entire m dia and community with his power and grace . . . I would watch Pre run the hills of Eugene, sprint these faster than any mortal could imagine, and power a kick over the last 400 meters that I believe he did show the world when he refused to fold to Lasse' Viren in '72. "Mac Court" as we would say, was the home for aspiring athletes, whether one was playing pick up basketball games as a prominent high school player during the summers, or working out in the weight room down below the court . . . and one aft rnoon I was finishing a workout as a high school player, and the doors flew open and I went ass-end-over-tea-kettle, sprang to my feet and felt an impending confrontation with: Who else, but Pre . . . who was sincerely apologetic, and it was true! He sp inted to all his classes, backpack and all; and if you were in his path, look out! This 'confrontation' (but now a fond memory) happened more than once during my years of working out at 'Mac Court'. I was fortunate not only to 'grow up' with Pre durin his years in Eugene, seeing him in the '72 Olympic Trials, watching all the dual meets, sellout crowds, maniacal following of his, and his legend with Bill Bowerman, but I also sat next to the same finish line, the evening of his final race, and woke up he next morning to my radio inform me of his death . . . this loss with all the memories of his whole personna, the U of O, Bill Bowerman, Nike, his fight against the AAU has never left me and I again was brought to sadness as I watched 'Without Limits' l st night knowing he was the greatest middle distance runner who ever lived . . . I know where he met his fate, I've driven the curves of Skyline Blvd, Lorraine Highway many times . . . I met the paramedics a few years later who either had direct or indire t knowledge of the details of his fate . . . and I had many teachers in my youth who were graduate students at U of O that brought Steve Prefontaine stories to our classrooms and held us in awe as he was considered the most dynamic and popular person on U of O campus during his years . . . In all due respect to the movies made of him, the most intriguing biography done was by a Eugene newsstation a few years ago who compiled footage and interviews of those who ran against him, those who loved him, those wh hated him (but now love him) and those who became celebrities and CEO's (i.d. Phil Knight of Nike) later in life . . . I have more 'memorabalia' that is fully engrained in my mind from the great experience of 'growing up' with Steve Prefontaine!

I would just like to say that after watching the movie "Without Limits", on superchannel, I fell in love with Steve Prefontaine. He seemed like a very unique individual. I admire what he stood for and feel that the movie left out some important informatio to the public. For instance at the end of the movie when Steve drops his frind off at home to sooth his mouth, the movie ditates that Steve sped back to party as if he was running the race in Montreal to get his 12:36. How does anyone know what happened? The public just sees "Pre" speeding on the road and then at the last minute "Pre" is on the wrong side of the road facing his fate with a truck. I would have liked to see more in the video, so I am hoping you can fill in the blanks. And to settle an argu ment between my boyfried and I was Steve drinking at the party so that at the time of driving he would have been intoxicated? Or does anyone not really know what happened to this incredibal man? I just think that Steve "Pre", had more to offer in his shor lived life, and his fans including myself are left wondering how a brillant person could have a tragic fate. MY last question is referred to Sara. How is she doing and does she suffer any long term affects from having to deal with Steves death?

i would just like to say that Steve PreFontaine has been a big influence on my life. When i first started running my coach said that I had no running technique what so ever, he said that all i had was guts and you know those things that males have, but t en when i watch the movies and read the book on Pre, he was the same way that i was so now everyday that i run i push myself just a little bit harder knowing that Pre was not the best when he first started. And i would also like to add that Tuloso-Miday C oss-Country is gonna win the 4a texas state title this year so Lockhart watch out cause here we come, and good luck to teh closest person to pre that i have every ran with RUNNING David Rodriguez.

I was a Distance Runner in the 70s. I ran in High School and at SWOCC in Coos Bay where Pre grew up. I got to know Pre a little at Track Meets, Cross Country races and Clinics. He was an incredible human being. When we spoke he made me feel like I was so mportant. His advice to me was to "always run hard and have fun". His death just crushed me back in "75". I think of him frequently when I'm running or climbing mountains. The most inspirational person I ever met. This is a GREAT SITE.

I have to wonder if Steve's spirit may have touched me back in 1975. I was finishing my sophmore year and starting my junior year of High School at Stuttgart American High School in Germany. I was running track during the time of Steve's death. I had n ver run Cross Country in my life, and something told me to train over the summer of 1995. It was just a feeling that I had. I didn't even know who Steve Prefontaine was. Where did I train that summer-in the woods. I had never run in the woods before, ut for some reason, I felt that is where I needed to train. While I was running in the woods, I always felt like something was pushing my back. Never really gave it a thought until now. That fall, to make a long story short, I went from being a pack ru ner to pushing myself to running out front. When the Germany finals came, I ran faster than I had ever run before and finished 5th. I know fifth isn't first, but from the get go back in the woods, I ran from my heart and gave every race everything I had I just saw the movie "Without Limits", and could not believe my eyes. I started doing some research about Steve on the internet, and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I use to wear my hair exactally like Steve's was in the pictures. I looked at t e way Steve held his hands while he ran, and it is exactally how I held my hands while I ran, kind of like holding a quarter in between my thum and index finger. What really hits home, however is how Steve breathed while he ran. I thought that I was the only one who breathed that way. Two inhails and two exhails, in sync. I don't know if Steve actually breathed that way or not, but the person in the movie did inhail and exhail in that manner. which made me sit up and take notice. Another strange fact, during my high school years, I was in love with a girl. She never knew that I had a crush on her. I met her in seventh grade. Her name was Mary. Mary Ulrich to be exact, and she had blond hair also. I never dated her, but she was my dream girl throug out high school and inspired me when I ran. I really have to wonder if Steve's spirit may have touched me. In conclusion, I use to wear Nike Waffel's. The blue and gold ones, and the first car that I wanted to own, but couldn't afford was a gold MG. S many of the same interests. Makes me wonder. Ive just finished reading everyone elses comments, and like so many, I first learnt of Prefontaine whilst having rented out the video "Without Limits" (just by chance. I was simply magnatised by Pre s strength, vivacity, his self belief and mostly admired him for the work he carried out with children and the Oregan prison - all that at such a young age - he still puts so many of us to shame - especially the modern athletes of today. I cryed after having watched to movie. I have also watched the "Prefontaine" movie and would also like to know which movie is closer to the truth. I've recently discoverd Steve Prefontaine and I am amazed that I'd never herd of him before. Though he died before I was born, I am tremendously moved and inspired by his story. I've always considered myself a runner but now being done w/ high school and ushing 220lbs, I find it hard to keep up w/ the running. I now try to run 3-5 times a week and I've started the local 5k races. Pre, 25 years after his death, still sparks althelets to strive and just do it! I know this because I feel the fire inside me t compete like hell and not look back. I will continue my research on Pre's life and accomplishments w/ the web, books, & film. I never had anything to do with sports, and never wanted to. If I had gone to high school with Steve Prefontaine instead of a jerk like Deion Sanders, I would have been more likely to care about something. Steve had an infectious fire in his belly. I feel like I missed out on something. When I am sitting on the couch being lazy I think to myself, "Do ya think Pre sat around or did he do something?", and I get up and do something. I am glad there is somewhere that honors his memory like this site. It is nice to know so many people were touched by Pre. I certainly was when I saw "Without Limits" the first time. I cried and didn't understand why. I think it was better than "Prefontai e" but which one is closer to the facts? I want to see the documentary and read more comments by people that knew him or at least met him. Great site. I was lucky enough to met Steve when I was about 12 at a indoor track meet in New Mexico. Five of us young girls from the La Jolla Track Team were able to met and get his autograph (which I still have). I will never forget that smile of his, that day is s ill very clear in my mind. Hi i am related to Steve, his father and my moms father are Brothers, i got to see Steve run a couple of times one time he signed the program book at his race for me. And my Mom and sister were extra's in the Movie "Prefontaine" this was a film that Uncle ray and Aunt Fredia, Were proud of they, gave advise on the film, the other film Without limits they did not give any input into but some relatives did. I feel Steve was a great runner, and my children get to read stuff about him and they think its great hey also get free t shirts from Uncle ray and aunt Fredia, its pretty neat any ways Thank you for Keeping his Spirit alive... Pre is America's greatest distance runner. I am 14 and Pre helped me accomplish my goal. Since I am a freshman in High School I wanted to beat Pre's best freshman mile time 5:01 and I did with a 4:55. He helped me set my new PR(personal record).

I believe I am the biggest Pre fan around and I think you've got some great stuff here. Currently I am a little strapped for cash but as soon as I get things going as far as money is concerned it is entirely possible that I will be making some purchases rom you. It's good to know that there are people out there who appreciate what Pre accomplished. I was quite steamed when I discovered that Pre was not on ESPN's list for top 100 athletes of the century--ticks me off!

I discovered Steve Prefontaine by watching the movie "Without Limits" and wanted to further research "Pre". I am fascinated by this extremely talented athlete, not only for his athletic ability but for his attitude, and I am sorry that the world only kne him for such a very short time. He has inspired me to be the best athlete I can be and to give all I have to my sport. I am twelve and I just completed my Senior year of Little League football and hope to make the Junior High team next year. as a competitive runner for 40 years I have always been a Prefontaine admirerer. Personal bests include a 4:29 mile as a 40 year old competing in the 5th Ave Mile in NYC. As a master (40yr.old) I ran PR 5km 15:35; 10km 32:47 and a 2:45 NYC Marathon. After a serious injury I am once again competing as a 52 yr, old and have gottne my time down to 18:24. Looking to break 18:00 at the 5km race in Ft.Myers, Florida the Edison Festival of Light.

First, I must start by telling you that you have an excellent website. I happened to have lived 2 houses away from Mary Marckx and her family growing up (Maywood Park in Portland, Oregon-Campaign Street). I met Pre when I was just a boy. He was sitting on the front steps with Mary one Saturday...it was somewhere in the ear y to mid 1970's. He had come to visit Mary for the weekend and they were just sitting there talking and enjoying the weather. My parents spotted them and told my sister and I who Pre was and to go and get his autograph. We did, and he was extremely gra ious and friendly. He told us about his race that day (which he had won of course). I wish I still had that piece of paper that he signed for me!! I certainly remember the morning after he was killed. My mother told me and showed me the newspaper. It really hit me hard since I had met him and had is autograph. I was only 8 years old. I watched both Pre movies and happen to have a copy of "Fire on the Track" which I taped off of television in 1995. They showed it before the Prefontaine Classic which also marked the 20th anniversary of his death. I agree with your statement that "With ut Limits" was the better of the two films made about Pre. I recently taped it off of HBO. They have been playing it this past month in regular rotation. I again applaud you on this terrific website. I've lived in Oregon all of my life and Pre certainly is a legend in these parts. No one in this state will ever forget him. Thanks for sharing his memory with the rest of the world.
