Question: What do I need to qualify for the team?

Field event scoring is "decathlon" style and is based on the combination of both the shot/disc for the Team Throw and high jump/long jump for the Team Jump. Theoretically, Age/sex should not matter as all compete against the age group records for their peer group. But in some cases it does matter as some wind up competing against "softer" records.

A good score for one person in the Team Throw is 1100 pts or better. Typically the Discus is hardest event in which to score a lot of points. For the Team Jump, a good score is 1500 points or better.

Up to three people can participate in the Team Throw and three additional in the Team Jump with the best two out of three counting towards the team score. Scores are then rank-orderd in descending order from the competing teams. Best example other than the one listed below is to go and check out results from prior years to see how this works.

To score the field events, take your distance or height and convert to inches. Divide this mark by the record (converted to inches) for your age group and gender in the table below and multiply the result by 1,000. The result is the decathlon score.

All Women throw the 4 Kilo (8 lbs. 13 oz) shot, Men 18-49 the 16 pounder, Men 50-59 the 12 pounder, and Men 60+ the 8 pounder.

For the Discus, the women throw 1 Kilo while men 18-49 throw 2 Kilos, 50-59 1.5 Kilos and 60+ 1 Kilo.

	Example:

Female Age 47 Throws shot 24 feet 6 inches
Age group Record = 49 Feet 0 Inches

Throws discus 82 feet 6 inches
Age group Record = 193 Feet 2 Inches

        Convert to inches:
		24 feet 6 inches = 294 inches
		49 feet 0 inches = 588 inches

		82 feet 6 inches = 990 inches
		178 feet 11 inches = 2147 inches

        So (294/588) * 1000 = 500 points
        and (990/2147) * 1000 = 461 points

        Total USCAA points = 500 + 461 = 961
