THE BEST EVER?
Babe Ruth is the best baseball player in the history of the game, right? Possibly, but don't bet your life on it. Shoeless Joe Jackson of the Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Indians was also pretty good, and may have received the title of "The Best Ever" if it wasn't for the 1919 World Series. That series still haunts many today and remains one of the most infamous moments in professional sports history. It all goes like this: the Chicago White Sox were playing the Cincinnati Reds in the 1919. The White Sox had a great record in 1919 and had many stars, such as Jackson and Eddie Cicotte. They were one of the most dominating teams of their time. But, it all fell apart during that infamous series. Legend has it that gamblers gave eight White Sox players large payoffs in order to throw the series. Nobody knows who exactly took the bribes, there is even a question of how serious the accusitions were, but we all know that something happened in 1919. In the first game of the series the Sox lost 9-1. In the second game they were beaten 4-2. It was then when the Cincinnati Reds first learned of the gambling. Legend has it that a mysterious man came up to Ed Roush after the second game and told him the White Sox got into a fight in the locker room, where Ray Schalk accused Lefty Williams of throwing the game. The man told Roush that Williams beat up a gambler that did not give him his money. Roush did not think much of it, but later that same man came to him and told him that the gamblers had gotten to the Reds. It was then that Reds pitcher Jake Daubert admitted to being comfronted by a gambler, but he told him to get lost. Now everyone knew the World Series was being thrown. Commishioner Kennesaw Mountain Landis banned eight Chicago players, including Jackson, from baseball for eternity for their involvment with gamblers. What is often overlooked, though, is that Jackson hit over .350 for the series. It does not seem that a man trying to throw the World Series would hit like that. Today nobody really knows what happened, but Shoeless Joe was never allowed into the Hall of Fame because of that infamous series. If you look at the stats, Shoeless Joe is quite a comparison to the Babe. If he had only gotten a chance, Shoeless Joe may have become the best ever. Now he is not even in the Hall of Fame.
