Impression Of Bangkok

Bangkok, capital of Thailand, filled with simple people and their way of simple living. My last trip was end of 2002, and BKK haven changed much since then. The city is still very much alive with the large number of tourists.

Many tourist would choose BKK for shopping probably because stuff in BKK is rather cheap. Be it clothings, food, accomodation etc, everything is pretty affordable. This time round, i managed to get Eastin Bangkok Hotel during my 5 days stay in BKK, my initial intention was to get to ASIA Hotel which was fully booked. Eastin Hotel, I would say is a very nice hotel, facitiies like swimming pool, poolside bar, gym are all available for use. Eastin Hotel is located along New Phetchburi Road, alongside with D'Ma Hotel which i stayed in during my 1st time in BKK.

During this 5 days, i've visited many places in BKK, like Chao Phrya River, MBK, Patpong NM, Calypso Cabaret, Suan Lom NM, Hard Rock Cafe BKK, etc. Mah Boon Krong would probably meet all your shopping needs, it has almost everything in 1 shopping centre, probably the largest I guess, t-shirts would range from 100Baht to 300Baht depending on how good your baragining skills are. Not only does MBK provides a place for shopping, it does have eating outlets too like KFC, McDonalds. There is this particular "japanese" ramen restuarant which I tried, the food is pretty good and cheap, the restuarant name is call OiShi, located on the ground level.

Next on to Patpong NM, this is a place where your determination and your bargaining skills would be tested. For determination, there's a whole stretch of Ah Go Go bars, where waitress would be trying to drag you into the bar. What is it that attracts tourist into the bar??It's definately not because they have good service, it's only because these bars offers Thai girls on bar-top dancing, and beer is rather cheap ranging from 100Baht onwards. Most of the girls dancing on the bar-top are pretty much "available" depending on how well you can talk. Just make sure you have enough small change for tipping.

Along Patpong there's another stretch of stalls selling clothings and stuff too. Bargaining is a must when you are in Patpong. Prices are often jacked up several times of the normal price. So be sure to bargain hard. Brands like Tag Huer, Abercrombie and Fitch, Omega etc can be found but of course they ain't the original.

When visiting BKK, try to stretch your stay over the weekend, so you can get to try the weekend flea market selling almost everything under the sun, denim jeans and jackets are 1 of the main highlights of this market. You would probably wanna spend the whole day just walking around in Chatuchak weekend market.

Gems Gallery, Leather Factory and Chao Phrya are just a small area of exploration that BKK has to offer, BKK has much much more areas to be explore, like Floating Market, Wat Arun, Royal Palace etc.

Be sure to visit the Calypso Cabaret show at Asia Hotel, the cabarets has a troupe of "ladyboys" dancers performing asian and european broadway style performances. Booking must be done really in advance, if you wanna get the front seat. After the show the dancers would all be available to take photos with the tourist, try to have small change for tipping.

Other places of interest would include, Siam Discovery Centre, Siam Paragon, Hard Rock Cafe, Yaowarat, Khao San NM etc.

Transportation is BKK is rather messy in my opinion, traffic tend to jam up easily, you might wanna consider taking the train system if you have enough time, it's pretty easy to take and it's cheap too. Another option would be the tuk-tuks, tuk-tuks would be able to weave in and out of traffic easily but at the expense of you breathing in the smokes and pollution.
