About Shorinji Kempo

SHORINJI KEMPO was founded in Japan in 1947 by Kaiso (Founder) Doshin So. It's roots can be traced to the Shaolin Temple in China, Bodhidharma, and to India. The name SHORINJI KEMPO, however, is unique and should not be confused with Shaolin KungFu, Shorin-Ryu Karate, or other martial arts that have Shaolin, Shorin, Kenpo, Kempo in their names.

SHORINJI KEMPO is currently organized world-wide through the World Shorinji Kempo Organization (WSKO)

SHORINJI KEMPO is a registered Service Mark with the US Patent and Trade Mark Office; registration number 1452552, serial number 73448050. The KEN symbol is also registered; registeration number 1529652, serial number 73670970. The use of the name and symbol are protected under the law, and restricted.

Location:

  • Sokoji Temple, corner of Laguna and Sutter St., San Francisco
    • Practice is held in the lower floor.
    • Please enter through the door on parking lot level.
    • The parking lot is accessed from a little street called Hemlock, off of Laguna, between Sutter and Post St.

Adult Class:

  • Tuesday & Thursday 6:30pm - 8:30pm
  • Saturday 4:30pm - 6:30pm
  • No Saturday class during July or August, resumes in Sept

Children's Class:

  • Saturday 5:00pm - 6:30pm
  • No class in July or August, resumes in Sept

Fees:

  • One time registration fee $20
  • Monthly fees for adults:
    • White belt $50
    • 3 kyu (brown belt) $45
    • 2 kyu $40
    • 1 kyu $35
    • Black belt $30
  • Monthly fees for children - $25
  • Discount for second family member $5 per month
  • Promotion tests
    • Green belt (under 12 years old) $20 per test
    • Brown belt $30 per test
  • Uniform (Gi)
    • World organization's official Gi - approximately $100 (depending on exchange rate)
    • Beginner's light weight Gi:
      • Size #0 - $20, #1 - $22, #2 - $24, #3 - $26, #4 - $28, #5 - $30, #6 - $32
