NewsThe Brixia gymnastics club won the Italian first division Championship three times (in 1998, 1999 and 2000). The 2000 team members were: Irene Castelli, Francesca Morotti, Monica Bergamelli, Giorgia Denti and Charlie Franzoni.
UpdatesMonica competed on bars in the final of the World Cup held in Stuttgart. She debuted her new combination of toe-on 1.5 pirouette connected to a forward giant turn in L-grip, a giant half and a Gienger. In Stuttgart, she brushed her feet on the low bar after the toe-on full and lost her swing. She jumped off the bar and opted to restart her routine, but her score was still over an 8 and the new combination should help her score even better next year.
At the recently concluded World Championships in Debrecen, Monica managed to place in the top 16 on both events she competed, bars and vault. She finished 12th in the vault semifinal with a 9.093 average, just 0.1 pts from earning a berth in the final. She placed 11th on bars with an 8.787. Monica is preparing for the upcoming World Championships in Debrecen, Hungary. She now has a 10.0 Start Value on the Uneven Bars and hopes to qualify for the apparatus finals on both bars and vault. The Italian Team has just returned home from Peking, China. They had trained with the Chinese National Team for two weeks, and the national coaches think it’s been a very interesting experience. The team will leave for France for another joint training camp next week. Monica Bergamelli, Vanessa Ferrari and Roberta Galante are all making the trip from Brescia to France. Ferrari and Galante are both born in 1990 and will be eligible to compete in Serie A, the first division in the Italian Team Championships next year. Giorgia Denti and Wendy Salvi are currently injured and have to stay home. During Event Finals in Patras, Monica landed her Podkopayeva vault on her hands and knees, getting a 0 score for the second effort, relegating her to 8th place. She came back with a hit bars set, on her way to an excellent 5th place finish. Ilaria Colombo wanted to rest a calf injury, and withdrew from the all-around competition. Mony stepped in and performed very well, improving her scores on beam to an 8.512, and floor to an 8.412. She placed 12th overall with a total of 35.086 pts, just one tenth out of a top 10 finish --all that despite being inexplicably underscored on vault. She will be competing in two EFs tomorrow. The Italian team was the biggest surprise of the recently concluded Senior European Gymnastics Championships, winning the bronze medal in the team event. Monica competed all four events, scoring a 9.412 on vault for her double twisting Yurchenko, and 9.212 on bars. She qualified for the event finals on both apparatus. She placed 11th in the all-around, behind her teammates Maria Teresa Gargano (5th), and Ilaria Colombo (8th). Despite struggling with injuries since the beginning of the year -the latest, three broken toes suffered while dismounting beam- Monica still competed at the Cottbus meet in Germany. She turned in one of her best performances on bars, qualifying for the final in third place with a 9.0. In the final, she improved her score to a 9.075 (9.8 SV) and won the bronze medal.
