Highlights

Here are the highlights of the greatest day in Denver Broncos history January 25, 1998.

Pre Game

Both teams were ready to go after 2 weeks of media hype and preparation. Many people wondered if the Broncos even had a chance against the 14 point favored Green Bay Packers. They would soon find out.

First Quarter

The Packers opened off the game with a big opening drive downfield. The Denver Broncos defense was getting the pressure up front. There were a few questionable calls on the opening drive that may have stopped the Packers and made them punt the ball.
After a drive of 8 plays and 76 yards in 4 minutes 2 seconds Brett Favre connected with Antonio Freeman for the first touchdown of the game to put the Packers up 7-0.

The Denver Broncos came back with a vengeance though. Led by Terrell Davis they marched down the field with a 10 play 58 yard scoring drive as Terrell Davis took it into the endzone for his first touchdown of the day.

The Green Bay Packers then came back. On the first play of their next drive Favre completed a pass to Robert Brooks for a 5 yard gain. Then on the next play 12 year veteran Tyrone Braxton picked off Favre to give the Broncos a chance to take the lead.

As Terrell Davis and the Broncos kept pounding the ball downfield the first quarter ended with the score tied at 7.

Second Quarter

The first play of the second quarter John Elway ran into the endzone for a 1 yard touchdown. This touchdown gave the Broncos their first lead of the game at 14-7. There was bad news for Denver though. Terrell Davis had been taken back to the locker room for a migraine and wouldn't be back until the third quarter.

This turnover then lead to a 51 yard field goal by Jason Elam one of the longest in Super Bowl history to give the Broncos a 17-7 lead.

After two possessions, one by each team, that ended in a punt. The Packers got the ball back and had a long time consuming drive to the 6 yard line where with seconds to go in the half Brett Favre connected with Mark Chmura for the Packers second touchdown of the day. The score at halftime was now 17-14.
