Bulldog Defense Proves Devastating For Bel Air

Midland- Coach Browning's 7 game loosing streak ended Friday Night as the Bulldogs beat up on the Highlander's 50-6. Midland's defense held El Paso to only 48 total yards with 106 through the air. This means the Highlander rushing game was -56 yards. Wow, what a performance.

If you put a high school offense through that type of beating, their offense is unable to compete. You also keep your offense on the field all night and they usually score at will. This how the Midland offense racked up 417 yards and 50 points. These points came with Sherman Davis scoring 3 Tds, two by run and one by pass; a safety by Jason Williams; a 23 yard run by Damon Johnson; a 2 yard run by Ryan Stewart; Camar Jackson's 44 yard run; and a 8 yard run by Jimmy Smith.

Coach Browning should be very pleased with the Bulldog performance but they need to keep up this intensity through out the season. Whoever said that the best offense is a good defense is right on the nose. This is how all the guys above got their name on my page and I hope they are there again next week.

Frenship Tops Bulldogs Again?

WOLFORTH?- What happened to the dawgs in their 24-21 loss to Frenship? Simply put, they could not stay with the competition at the 4-A level. This must be embarrassing for the team so I say stop playing the 4-A schools if you cannot beat them.

Even though Midland jumped out to a 8-0 2nd quarter lead with a 75 yard pass reception to Lance King and a safety by Erick McCright, Frenship rebounded with a TD and FG to go into the locker room with a 11-8 half-time lead. Frenship came out in the 2nd half and scored on a 38 yard pass from Jason Haynie to Tim Roten. Midland was back into the game in the 4th quarter when Damon Johnson ran in from the 2 yard line but Frenship added another TD to finish off the Bulldogs.

This loss is Coach Browning's 7th in a row. If he is not able to turn this trend around, a record not to his liking will be achieved. Midland High takes on El Paso Belair, a true powerhouse (hehe), next week and Andrews High, another 4-A team, the following week. I believe Coach Browning will fall short from setting the all-time consecutive loss record at Midland High and would hope that the dawgs would win something in the district but the chances are not in their favor.

THE PRE-SEASON REPORT

The Bulldogs, under Coach David Browning, should be a little quicker and stronger in ‘97. Browning, in his second year at Midland, continues to build momentum.

With the loss of RB Sammy Powell to graduation, Midland needs to get some depth in the back field. QB Lamar Jackson returns to run the I-Formation with WR Nick Smith and TE Luke Conder being on the receiving end.

Defensively, The bulldogs will rely on DE Nick Conder, LB Devon Butts and DB Damon Johnson to rally their teammates to victory.

Little is known about the 1997 Bulldogs but maybe it is because Browning is trying to keep things quite. Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine predicts Midland High will find itself in the District 4-5A cellar when the season ends but I believe anything can happen. I truly believe this will be the year that Midland High begins its run for contention in the District.
