Calango is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and trains at the Master Jiu-Jitsu Atlanta academy under Romero "Jacaré" Cavalcanti for at least one weekend out of each month. In addition, Calango trains at least 2 days a week with a group of fellow Jiu-Jitsu practitioners. Calango has trained in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since mid 1996. His first instructor was Fábio Gurgel. He has also trained under Haroldo Vitoriano Bunn and Felipe Netto. He still continues to train under Jacaré, Fábio, and Felipe Netto.
In addition to studying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Calango has also trained in Judo, and is still training in Chito-ryu Karate, in which he holds the rank of Black Belt. Calango was on track to become the State Champion in his division for the Sport Karate International league and the National Black Belt League before the ciruit broke down in 1997 in South Georgia, having only one tournament to go before disagreements within the league committee cause the circuit to disban. Calango began his training in Karate in 1989, but took an extended break before starting again in 1995, beginning at white belt again.
