Southern States Wrestling
Mark Curtis Memorial Show

by: Flying Burrito

On 5/14/00, at the Civic Auditorium in Kingsport, TN, Southern States Wrestling held The Mark Curtis Memorial Show in memory of Brian Hilderbrandt, who was known to most fans as WCW, SMW, and SSW referee Mark Curtis. Hilderbrandt was very active in working with Charities, to which proceeds from this show will be donated.

----

Mike Cooper won a Battle Royal over Bryan Wayne, Flex Armstrong, Ron Craven(?), & Three members of Death Row 2000

As soon as the match began, Armstrong eliminated one of the three masked men who make up Death Row 2000 by throwing him over the top rope. Cooper then eliminated Craven by pinfall. Cooper, Armstrong, and the remaining two members of Death Row 2000 then teamed up on the 500 pound Bryan Wayne. Wayne put up a good fight, but was eventually pinned when the other four men all piled on top of him. Armstrong was eliminated next, leaving Death Row 2000 to double-team Cooper. They tried to whip Cooper into the ropes, but he held on and tossed them both over the top rope to win the Battle Royal. By virtue of the victory, Cooper earned a future title shot for the Appalachian Title.

----

Cody Michaels d. "Ruthless" Roger Anderson

Michaels was in control for much of the match, with Anderson doing a lot of stalling on the floor. Anderson threatened to walk out at one point as he was not happy with the officiating, but he returned to the ring just before being counted out. Anderson then gained control, and threw Michaels from the ring. Anderson proceeded to kick Michaels off of the ring apron each time he tried to get back in the ring, but on the third try, Michaels caught Anderson with a shoulder thrust and sunset flip. Anderson grabbed the middle rope, but the referee kicked his arms, forcing him to release the ropes and allowing Michaels to complete the sunset flip. Anderson kicked out at 2. Michaels then hit Anderson with a flying body press off of the top rope, but Anderson rolled through it and held down Michaels for a 2-count. Anderson got in the referee's face and argued that it should have been a 3-count, when Michaels snuck up from behind, rolling Anderson up for the 3-count. After the match, Anderson continued to argue with the referee as they walked to the back, promising to file a protest with SSW Commisioner Ken Bowles.

----

Chuck Jones (w/"The Duke of New York" Al Getz) d. Brian Overbay to retain the SSW Appalachian Title

Before the match, Al Getz announced that Overbay had an "accident" in the parking lot at the show the night before, and had suffered a broken wrist. Overbay then came to the ring with a brace on his left wrist. Then, referee James McHone came to the ring and declared that as the Senior Official, he would officiate this bought, forcing the referee who had been assigned to the match to leave the ring. McHone made it obvious that he would not call the bought fairly, as he shook the hands of Jones and Getz and celebrated with them.

During the match, Overbay had Jones pinned several times, but McHone made extremely slow counts, allowing Jones to kick out. Eventually, Jones locked Overbay's arm in a sort of leglock-wristlock submission hold. When asked if he wanted to give up, Overbay was audibly yelling "no", but McHone rang the bell and awarded the victory to Jones anyway.

----

Flex Armstrong & Jim White d. "The Nature Boy" Buddy Landel & "The Duke of New York" Al Getz

This started as a singles match between Armstrong and Landel, with Kingsport wrestling legend Jim White and Al Getz as the managers. During the match, Armstrong and Landel were fighting on the floor when White came up from behind Getz and threw him into the ring. White then laid out Getz with a punch and covered him, with the referee making a 3-count. Armstrong & White were announced as the winners.

----

After an intermission, it was time for the annual inductions into the Kingsport Wrestling Hall of Fame. The ceremony opened with the emcee speaking about the life and career of Brian Hilderbrandt (Mark Curtis), who passed away on 9/9/99 after a battle with stomach cancer. Hilderbrandt was this year's first inductee into the Hall of Fame. Hilderbrandt's widow, Pam, who was accompanied to the ring by Hilderbrandt's long-time friend Cody Michaels, accepted the award.

The next inductee was "Pappy" Earl, a well-known wrestler in the Kingsport area who wrestled here for many years. He said that despite having lost an eye and an ankle, that wrestling had been good to him, and he spoke highly of the talent that he had seen in the ring thus far tonight.

The third inductee was "The Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez, a former 2-time NWA Tag Team Champion who was known for his legendary fueds with Chief Wahoo McDaniel. Fernandez wrestled many times in Kingsport while working for Crockett Promotions, who were members of the NWA. Fernandez spoke about his fueds with McDaniel, and said that McDaniel needs everyone's prayers that he will recover from health problems that he is currently experiencing (He did not go into details about the nature of these problems).

The next inductee was Chief Wahoo McDaniel. After playing in the NFL, McDaniel had a wrestling career the spanned nearly 4 decades. A true legend of the sport, McDaniel also wrestled in Kingsport while working for Crockett Promotions. McDaniel thanked the fans for their support, saying that they wouldn't be there without them. He also said that in his day, there were people who would say that they didn't like wrestling, but now it's one of the biggest sports in the world, and everyone likes it.

The final two inductees were unable to attend the ceremony. I apologize for not being able to remember the name of the first of these inductees. He was the only one in the group with whom I was not familiar. I will update this information if I can find out. His wife was present to accept his award for him.

The final inductee was Ron Wright. He is truly a legendary figure in Kingsport wrestling history. From what I have bee told, he was a monster heel in his time who was despised by the fans. Everyone who attended wrestling events in Kingsport in the 50's and 60's remembers Ron and his brother Don. Wright was unable to attend due a blood clot in his leg and an infection. Fellow Hall of Fame inductee "Pappy" Earl accepted the award on Wright's behalf.

----

"The Raging Bull" Manny Fernandez d. Ron Ray & Boris Dragoff in a 3-way Mexican Death Match

This match was like a flag-on-a-pole match, where one of the wrestlers would have to retrieve a flag from atop a high pole in one corner of the ring in order to win the match. The Russian Dragoff was acccompanied to the ring by someone dressed like Count Dracula (I did not catch his name).

The action spilled onto the floor shortly after the match began, with Fernandez and Dragoff double-teaming the 7-foot tall Ron Ray. Fernandez then grabbed a chair from the front row and nailed Dragoff with it. After a few unsuccessful attempts by each wrestler to retrieve the flag, Ray appeared set for victory, as Fernandez was down outside the ring and Dragoff was down in the corner. As Ray started climbing the turnbuckles, Bryan Wayne, who had wrestled in the Battle Royal earlier, ran to ringside and knocked him to the floor. While Wayne carved on Ray's forehead with a fork, Fernandez clotheslined Dragoff out of the ring and retrieved the flag to score the victory. Ray was bleeding badly by the time Wayne ended his assault.

----

The War Machine (w/Chuck Jones) d. Tracey Smothers to win the SSW Heavyweight Title

This match went back and forth, with Smothers showing tremendous displays of athleticism. Smothers had War Machine pinned several times, but in each case, Jones distracted the referee and prevented him from making the count. Smothers eventually became disgusted and shoved the referee into the corner. This distraction was just enough to allow War Machine to put Smothers down and score the pinfall to win the SSW Heavyweight Title from Smothers.

----

"Handsome" Beau James & KC Thunder vs. Ricky Harrison & The Iron Cross for the SSW Tag Team Titles - Special referee PJ Sharpe

I'm not sure what led to their breakup, but PJ Sharpe had been James & Thunder's manager at the last SSW show that I was able to attend, but it was obvious tonight that there was no love lost between them tonight. Harrison and The Iron Cross were the champions going into this match, and the stipulations were that whoever was pinned would have to leave SSW.

The four men worked the best match of the night, with Harrison and Iron Cross exhibiting excellent teamwork and some good double-team moves. Beau James was pinned in what would have to be considered a surprise ending, considering that he and his family are the owners and promoters of SSW. After the fall, however, KC Thunder got on the mic and challenged Harrison and Iron Cross to double-or-nothing, saying that if Harrison and Iron Cross could beat he and James again, that he would leave SSW too.

This time, James and Thunder worked Harrison over for several minutes, nearly scoring the pinfall several times. Referee PJ Sharpe was then accidentally hit and sent flying out of the ring. Another referee ran out, but he went down also. Senior official James McHone then came down, but Harrison pulled him out of the ring just before he made a 3-count which would have given James and Thunder the win. One of the wrestlers from the back ran to the ring and tried to toss a briefcase to James, but PJ Sharpe, who had recovered and climbed back into the ring, intercepted it and hit James in the head. Harrison then went after James in the corner, but Sharpe turned heel and hit him in the back with the briefcase. James covered Harrison, and Sharpe made a very quick 3-count to award the match and the Tag Team Titles to James and Thunder.

After the match, Sharpe, James, and Thunder continued to beat down Harrison and Iron Cross. Mike Cooper and Flex Armstrong ran in to try to help, but they were taken out as well. At this point, Wahoo McDaniel, who had been signing autographs near ringside, had seen enough and ran to ringside, hitting James and Thunder with his famous, thunderous knife-edge chops. Sharpe, James, and Thunder then retreated to the back.

Just before the show ended, Sharpe came back out on the stage and said that due to the stipulations of the match, this is the last time Ricky Harrison will be seen in SSW. The ring announcer then said that this matter would be reviewed by the board of directors, and the show came to a close.

by: Spartan

My friends and I would go this taping for the TNN and Hardcore TV show. Special Note: After the show I got to meet Tommy Dreamer, New Jack, Chris Chetti and Danny Doring. Doring almost got us backstage to the ECW locker room. It surely would have been cool, but it was nice for Doring to at least try to get us backstage. Anyone that has the chance to go to an ECW should as they will get their money's worth.

Dupps vs Nova/Kid Cash vs Doring/Roadkill

This was a great showing of the young talent in ECW. However, my new personal favorite tag team in ECW, Doring & Roadkill would get the win at this three way dance and now their well-deserved push continues. Winners: Doring/Roadkill

Super Crazy vs Someone in black trunks and black hair

Sorry, but I didn't catch Super Crazy's opponets name. However, Super Crazy showed off his moves and pinned the unknown man. Winner: Super Crazy

Tajiri vs Little Guido

Another good match, as Tajiri was actually playing the role of face in this match. Tajiri hits a brainbuster and gets the pin. After the match, Guido is upset at the ref and puts the ref in a submission hold, as Guido would try to break the refs legs. Winner: Tajiri

TNN Opening with Joey Styles and Joel Gertner

Gertner did his usual mic work. There was no Cyrus there to censor Gertner. Lance Storm and Dawn Marie came out, as Justin Credible did not make the show. Storm was upset that The Impact Players are not on the marquee on tonight's show, but that he saw Josh Wilcox of the New Orleans Saints, name on the billboard. He said that the Calgary Stampeders (who play in the CFL) have more NFL wins than the New Orleans Saints. That got Storm immediate heel heat. He said he is refusing to fight in New Orleans and then left.

Corino/Rhino vs Dreamer/Wilcox

There was some stalling as Corino shows why he is gold on the mic. After some wrestling, Wilcox would get a chair and nailed Dreamer with a chair. Rhino hits a piledriver on Dreamer for the 3 count. Wilcox mentioned how much New Orleans sucks, for booing their own team. Rhino grabs Francine and brings her to the locker room. Dusty Rhodes comes out and gives Corino, Victory and Wilcox all elbows. Then, he and Dreamer celebrated with the fans. Winners: Corino/Rhino

Eric Watts vs Prodigy

Prodigy is Tom Marquez. Eric Watts comes to the ring with a belt. He claims that he is the Mid-South champion and that his dad was the greatest wrestler to ever wrestle in New Orleans. Watts wins in a squash. Raven runs in and DDT's Watts. Winner: Eric Watts

C.W. Anderson vs Sabu

Sabu was over with the people as he would win in a squash after nailing C.W. with a Triple Jump Moonsault. Winner: Sabu

ECW World Title: Mike Awesome (c) vs Spike Dudley

This was just like their Guilty as Charged match, as Awesome would win with an Awesome bomb in the corner through the table for the win. RVD comes out after Awesome berated him on the mic. RVD nails Awesome with a great dive. Winner: Mike Awesome

Baldies vs Balls/New Jack

This was a wild brawl as both teams went everywhere in the building. Anything and everything was used in this match. Angel gets the wins with a chair shot to the head of New Jack. Balls chases the Baldies away with chair shots of his own. Winners: Baldies

ECW World TV Title: Rob Van Dam (c) vs Masato Tanaka

It should be noted that Tanaka has new tights as he is no longer wearing the bicycle shorts, but wearing long trunks that look like as if he had football pads in them. RVD got the biggest pop of the night. This was a great match, as Tanaka hits every big move, including the Roaring Elbow, DDT off the top through a table, and Diamond Dust. However, those moves did not put away RVD. RVD hits the Van Daminator and the 5 star frog splash for the pin. Winner: RVD

by: The Man they call Shoe

"Dastardly" Danny Doring & Road Kill vs. Vito "The Skull" LoGrasso & C.W. Anderson

This match started out fast paced, with Doring controlling most of the action. He tagged in Road Kill, who dominated his opponents with power moves. When Doring came back into the ring, Anderson & The Skull took control of the match. These two men showed good teamwork, for their inexperience as a team. They kept taunting and attacking Road Kill, getting him to chase them, and then double-teaming Doring while the ref sent Road Kill out of the ring. This domination of Danny went on for 5 or 6 minutes. Doring was finally able to hit a move, and both men made it to their corners for a tag. The fresh Road Kill came into the ring and nailed both of his opponents with a clothesline. He then whipped Anderson into the ropes and hit the side slam...and then did the same to "The Skull". Doring made it back to his feet and joined in the battle. Anderson made a mistake, which cost his team the match. Danny Doring hit a leg drop from the top rope, followed by a top rope splash from Road Kill. Winners - Road Kill & Danny Doring

Uganda vs. Spanish Angel

Uganda pretty much dominated this whole match. I think it ended after a side slam and a big splash. Winner - Uganda

Simon Diamond & Tony DeVito vs. Chris Chetti & Nova

Simon came out and started running his mouth about how he couldn't find anyone worthy of being his partner. He then complimented Tom Marquez a little. He said maybe Marquez could be his partner, then Tom started to get in the ring. Simon then said that Marquez couldn't be his partner because "Simon didn't say for him to get in the ring." Simond said no man or woman in ECW was worthy of being his partner. Then Jazz comes out, and Diamond says Simon didn't say for her to come out...and for her to take her flat chest and big butt back to the locker room. She gave him a low blow, then Simon tells Marquez that he has to prove himself be defeating Jazz. She did get the Jazz Stinger on Tom Marquez, but Simon & Tony DeVito attacked her. Then Nova & Chris Chetti came out to make the save. This is when the tag match actually started. This was a pretty good match also...or what I could see of it. Everyone in front of us was standing up again during this match. It ended when Chetti hit his spinning, inverted DVD get the pinfall. Winners - Chris Chetti & Nova

Little Guido vs. Super Crazy vs. Yoshihiro Tajiri (Three Way Dance)

This was another match I could just see highlights of...because the idiots stood all the way through this one. I was able to see a little, but not much because everyone in front of me was like 6'5, and I'm 5'11. Tajiri nails some really stiff kicks one someone, but I couldn't see who. He would deliver a kick, then everyone would yell "one more time", then Tajiri looked around...laughed....and kicked them again. At one Guido was knocked outside the ring, and thrown over the railing. Super Crazy hit an Asai moonsault over the railing on Guido. Every time he got a chance, Big Sal took advantage of Crazy & Tajiri. Super Crazy got the pinfall on Guido after a moonsault. After a few more minutes, Tajiri hit the brainbuster and pinned Super Crazy. Winner - Yoshihiro Tajiri

New Jack vs. Tracy Smothers

Joel Gertner came down to the ring, and ran off the ring announcer. He talked about how he was chosen to commentate on the TNN show. New Jack first came out to attack Joel Gertner, carrying a trash can full of weapons. After Gertner retreated to the back, Tracy Smothers & "THe Big Don" Tommy Rich made their return to ECW...decked out in the F.B.I. outfits. They attacked New Jack, but he was successful in fighting them off for a while. He used a trash can, a wet floor sign, a hockey stick, and then used the top part of a mop bucket on Smothers' head. He then pulled a staple gun out of his pants, and started shooting staples into Tommy Rich's head. Tommy started bleeding pretty bad after this. As the F.B.I. tried to retreat to the locker rooms, New Jack cut them off and they ended up fighting near the sound table. Rich & Smothers gained control, and brought New Jack back to the ring. Tommy Rich used the staple gun on New Jack a few times, which started him bleeding. The double teamed New Jack and taunted the fans for 3 or 4 minutes, but then New Jack got control back. I think he may have won with some sort of powerbomb. It was hard to see (again because of the people up front standing). After he won, Tommy Rich stayed at ringside for a few minutes, yelling back-and-forth with New Jack. When the Big Don finally left, New Jack threw his weapons out to the fans...except for the staple gun. Winner - New Jack

Tommy Dreamer & Francine vs. Steve Corina & Tammy Lynn Bytch

Steve Corino came out and talked about Tommy Dreamer, like he has been doing the past few weeks. Tommy Dreamer & Francine were at a table signing autographs near the T-shirt table. Corino said that Tommy is now a cripple and that he should come to the ring and do the honorable thing and "lay down" for him to help the young talent get over. Tommy & Francine made their way through the crowd to the ring. Dreamer was wearing black pants and a black shirt with the white stripes down the side, and I think Corino said something about TOmmy trying to be like The Rock. Dreamer got the mic and did a pretty funny Rock impersonation. Some fans started chanting "Show your Puppies" to Francine, and Tommy said that this was ECW...in ECW you should chant "Show your tits!" Everyone started chanting "Show Your Tits!" and Francine acted like she was about to, until Corino stopped her. He said that this was pro wrestling, and not a T & A show. Francine got on the mic and told the crowd that it was too hot for clothes and she was ready to show them everything she had...but Steve Corino messed that up for everybody. Corino talked some more trash about Dreamer, and told Tommy to lay down so he could pin him. Corino said he also had some backup, to make sure that Francine didn't interfere...and out came Tammy Lynn Bytch.

Tommy and Francine said that ECW has been famous for some of it's mixed tag team matches, and that's what they should have tonight. Corino didn't seem to want a mixed tag, but Tammy accepted on their behalf. Tommy took control early on, which sent Corino over to his corner to tag in Dawn Marie. She was very slow about getting into the ring with Dreamer, and as soon as she did Tommy tagged in Francine. Tammy quickly tagged in Corino who started his assault on Francine. I wasn't able to see a lot of this match because of everybody in front of us standing up. But what I was able to see, was Francine giving Corino the bronco buster. Tammy Lynn Bytch somehow got laid out, and Dreamer hit Corino with the DDT to get the pinfall. I'm not sure what really happened, but Dreamer either is a great actor or was was in some serious pain and he was helped to the locker rooms by security. Dawn Marie also appeared to be pretty bad off. Winners - Tommy Dreamer & Francine

Justin Credible vs. Jerry Lynn

This match started when Justing Credible, Jason, and Jeff Jones came to the ring and called out Bill Alfonso. They made fun of him and talked about how he had no one to back him up. Alfonso came down anyway, and confronted the 3 men by himself. They talked about how they got RVD & Sabu banned from Duluth, and that they would have Alfonso banned from TNN. Alfonso climbs into the ring, only to be attacked by the trio. Then Jerry Lynn came rushing down to Alfonso's side.

This is when Lynn vs. Credible started. This was a pretty good match. Again, I couldn't see a lot of it. There was a lot of back-and-forth action, with both men controlling parts of the match. Nearing the end, Jason gets involved and they try to get Lynn on a table. As Justin climbs to the top, Jerry Lynn reverses it and gets Jason stretched out across the table. He then launches Justing Credible from the top rope, onto Jason, and through the table. He goes for the pin, but Credible escapes. When Credible & Jason are back on their feet, Credible irish whips Lynn at Jason....who is waiting with the kendo stick. Jerry Lynn is able to revers the irish whip, and Credible is on the receiving end of the stcik. Jerry Lynn goes on to win the match with his cradle piledriver. After Jerry Lynn and Bill Alfonso leave the ring, Justin Credible & Jason get up and tease a break-up...but then they hug and leave together. Winner - Jerry Lynn

Buh Buh Ray Dudley vs. Spike Dudley

The Dudley Boyz came out and Buh Buh Ray got on the mic. He talked about beating The Gangstas, The Eliminators, Balls & Tanaka, Van Dam & Sabu, Public Enemy, and all the other teams they have beaten. He said they were the 7-time ECW Tag Champs, and that (as a team) they had nothing else to prove. He told D-Von that he could have the night off and go meet that fat white girl that he's been talking about hooking up with. They hugged and D-Von left the ring. Buh Buh Ray said that he would beat Van Dam and take the TV Title to Vince McMahon, or he could beat Taz and take the ECW Title to Vince. Buh Buh said if anyone wanted to see them after tonight, that they would need to tune in to USA at 9:00 every Monday night. He said if anyone in the back had the guts to fight him, to come on down.

Highway to Hell plays and out comes Little Spike Dudley. This was a good match. If had a lot of brawling, but still very good. They two men fought all over the convention center. They first battled into a corner between two sets of bleachers. After Little Spike got the advantage, he climbed to the top of the bleachers and jumped down onto Buh Buh Ray. They then battled across behind the ringside seats to the other side of the arena. They were fighting near the bathrooms and concession stand, when two idiot fans decided they wanted to get involved. One of them attacked Buh Buh, and I think Buh Buh Ray may have taken one of them down, and then security stepped in and got the 2 men under control, and escorted them out of the building. While security was clearing out the troublemakers, somehow Buh Buh Ray and Spike got back in the ring without me seeing them. Anyway, Sign Guy got involved in the match, but Spike took care of him. Spike hit Buh Buh Ray with a running bulldog off the turnbuckle to get a 2-count. He then hit the Acid Drop and got the pin on Buh Buh Ray. Winner - Spike Dudley

This brought D-Von out. The Dudley Boyz took control on Little Spike and pounded on him until Balls came down the aisle. He was able to get in one good chair shot before the Dudleys took over on him. They hit the Dudley Death Drop 2 or 3 times on Balls.

Taz vs. D-Von Dudley (ECW Heavyweight Title)

After The Dudley Boyz cleared the ring of Balls & Spike, they started running their mouths again. They said that if Van Dam had the guts to come out and face them, that they would win his TV Title and take it to Vince...and then said the same thing about Taz again. This time, Taz came out. He got in the ring and quickly beat the crap out of both Dudleys. He hit both with a few suplexes, and then locked the Tazmission on D-Von to get the win. The Dudleys cleared out pretty fast and Taz got on the mic. He said The Dudley Boyz were going to the WWF because they don't have the talent to be in ECW. He said something else, that I couldn't hear...and then the ECW Theme started playing as Taz left the ring. Winner - Taz
