A brief history of soft tennis in Malaysia

In 1988, the ASTF sent an invitation to the Olympic Council of Malaysia ( OCM ) to send a
Malaysian representative to the ASTF AGM in Japan. OCM President Tan Sri Hamzah Abu Samah approached the Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia ( LTAM ) but no favourable response was elicited.  Tan Sri Hamzah then nominated OCM Executive Secretary Mr. Tan
Eng Kim to attend as the country's representative.

The ASTF ( Asian Soft Tennis Federation ) Secretary General Mr. Yukio Miyamoto encouraged
Mr. Tan Eng Kim to set up a Malaysian soft tennis organisation. He offered his assistance to that end. A soft tennis constitution was drafted and the Soft Tennis Association of Malaysia
( STAM ) pro-term committee was set up with Mr. Tan Eng Kim as the chairman. STAM
was officially registered in 1990. Development of soft tennis was carried out in Kuala Lumpur especially the University of Malaya ( UM ) and Universiti Pertanian Malaysia ( UPM ).
Mr. Yong Bang Kuang, a UPM Sports Coordinator, played an important role in the
development of national soft tennis. Mr. Yong Bang Kuang was the Chairman of Technical and
Development Committee STAM until 1994.

were at the soft tennis meeting in Jakarta 1992.

In June, 1992 two Malaysians were sent to Tokyo, Japan to undergo a short course of soft
tennis organised by ASTF and Japan Soft Tennis Association. They are Mr. Ngo Ah Lek
from Segamat and Mr. Lee Kem Siang from Ipoh. On their return, soft tennis coaching
and umpiring courses were organised in Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Segamat and Johor Bahru.
From that year on, Malaysia has never failed to send  soft tennis teams to participate
international soft tennis championships. Although they did not win any convincing matches,
their presence and their friendliness have won many hearts in the soft tennis championships
in and around Asia.

of wild life as well as sports in Malaysia. His presence will further enhance the expansion
of soft tennis in Malaysia.
