WorldNet '98 - Match Reports

These aren't the full match reports.  I'll do those later when I've cobbled together the very hasty notes which I tried to take. Let me just give you a flavour for what happened...

SBA FC 0 - 1 Leeds

In some ways this was exactly what I expected from tournament matches. A very tight game indeed. I'd have to say that I was surprised at just how good Leeds were. Even on a massive pitch there didn't seem to be any space for anyone. In the thirty minutes we played I can only remember one decent chance. That was the one that Leeds scored from, and it was a very well taken goal. We ran our hearts out but just couldn't get the break...

SBA FC 0 - 0 Middlesbrough

Boro were a tough physical side, with some very crafty old forwards. But for large parts of this game we ran them ragged. For me, this was our best game. Fast , aggressive, determined, and going 100% for the win that we so desperately needed. But thirty minutes just isn't long enough sometimes. We made a lot of chances, and if matches were awarded on points then this one was ours...

SBA FC 2 - 2 Sheffield Wednesday

And it's the only bit of the luck that we had all day. We took the lead mid-way through the second half when Matt Archer shot through a crowded penalty area following a goalmouth scramble. For a moment it looked like we'd done it. But, as so often happens in football, we lost our concentration for a minute following the goal and it cost us dearly. Wednesday, who had also pushed hard all game for the win, broke down the right, low cross, goal. Like all of the other games we tried and tried and tried for the winner, but it just wouldn't come. And we were out...
