1999 Mountaineer Recruits

 

Troy Albea, 6-0, 200, 4.5, Lincolnton, GA (Georgia Military College/Lincoln Co. HS) - Receiver
Played for Lincoln County's Group A state championship team as a junior and lead his team to a state playoff appearance as senior.  Named to the Augusta Chronicle's All Area team as a senior.  Played junior college ball for Georgia Military College the past two seasons.  During his freshman year, Albea was GMC's second leading receiver (28 receptions, 396 yards, 2 TDs) behind current ASU player Daniel Wilcox.  This past season, Albea was named to the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association's All Region Team and helped lead GMC to a 10-2 record and a #6 ranking in the final national junior college football poll.   As a high school senior, Lincoln Co. coach Larry Campbell called Albea "the best receiver in the state."  Albea says he's learned to be a leader and how to improve himself at GMC.  "It's made me better and gets me mentally prepared for D-I."

Tershaard Barr, 5-11, 215, Gallitan, TN (Gallitan HS) - Running Back
A late qualifier recently signed by ASU.  Rushed for over 1,500 yards his senior year at Gallitan HS.  Played four years at Gallitan HS and helped lead his team into the state 5-A playoffs as a senior.  Named to The Tennessean's Class 5-A All-Midstate 2nd. team.  Named to the East - West All Star Classic played at Middle Tennessee State Univ. on July 24, 1999.  In that contest, Barr was named Defensive MVP as a result of his play at linebacker, a position he never played at Gallitan HS.

Phil Crumb, 5-11, 205, 4.5, Raleigh, NC (Hargrave Military Academy/Garner HS) - Defensive Back/Running Back.
A re-committment from last year's signing class.  Crumb was a two time all CAP-8 Conference performer as a sophomore and junior at Raleigh's Millbrook HS.   Played both RB and DB at Millbrook.  Crumb transferred to Garner HS for his senior season, but was not allowed to play during his senior year.  Was considered one of the state's top players entering his senior season.  Prepped this past season at Hargrave Military Academy.

Joe Doran, 6-5, 265, Troy, OH (Fork Union Military Academy) - Offensive/Defensive Lineman

Adam Horton, 6-2, 230, Salisbury, NC (East Rowan HS) - Tight End/Linebacker
Defensive MVP of North Carolina's 1998 Shrine Bowl team.  A preseason all state pick who was named to the Southern Piedmont 3-A All Conference team for two consecutive seasons.  Named to the Charlotte Oberver's All Observer Defensive Team. Honored as East Rowan's MVP and the Rowan Co. Defensive Player of the Year.  As a senior, led his team with 163 tackles, including 97 first hits, 11 sacks, and 21 tackles for loss.  Also had three fumble recoveries.  On offense, he averaged 9.8 yards per carry at tailback and also saw action at TE.  Averaged 29.6 yards per kickoff return and had a 93 yard kickoff return for a TD.  A four year starter who was a team captain in both his junior and senior seasons.  Also a good baseball player.  Last season he batted .500 with eight home runs and 37 RBI.   Played catcher and was 6-1 as a pitcher helping East Rowan to the state 3-A semifinals.  Carries a 3.6 GPA and is a NC Scholar Athlete.  "Adam has been a special athlete for us," said East Rowan coach Jeff Safrit.  "But as good as he has been a player, the thing that sets him apart is the fact that he is a great individual."

Leon Moore, 6-4, 220, 4.5, Winston-Salem, NC (Carver HS) - Defensive End
A member of North Carolina's 1998 Shrine Bowl team.  A second team All Northwest NC pick and a first team Piedmont Triad 4-A All Conference performer.  Has only played one year of high school football.  Was defensive team captain at Carver HS.  Had 103 tackles, five fumble recoveries and seven sacks as a senior.  ''Leon really blossomed this year,'' said Carver coach Keith Wilkes said. ''He is really one of those kids that works hard to better themselves, and it has paid off. His speed, size and height, I think, are what everyone was interested in. But he is also a 6-6 leaper in the high jump, to tell you what kind of athlete he is.'' Moore is an honor roll student and a member of the National Honor Society.

Joe Patrick, 6-3, 300, Winston-Salem, NC (Fork Union Military/Mt. Tabor HS) - Offensive Lineman
1997 Shrine Bowler who anchored the offensive line at Winston-Salem's Mt. Tabor HS.  Also named All Northwest NC as a senior at Mt. Tabor.  Prepped this past season at Fork Union Military Academy.

Mike Porter, 6-4, 230, Concord, NC (Concord HS) - Offensive Lineman
The younger brother of former ASU offensive lineman John Porter.  A Southern Piedmont 3-A pick and the top lineman on a team that advanced to the state 3-A playoffs and featured three 1,000 yard rushers.  Has the ability to add size.

Ramon Rinkin, 5-8, 170, Jacksonville, FL (Eastern Arizona College) - Defensive Back
Juco transfer from Eastern Arizona College.  Timed at 4.38 in the 40.   No other information currently available.

Sam Smalls, 6-0, 205, Winston-Salem, NC (Mount Tabor HS)
All Northwest NC selection and All Central Piedmont 4-A pick as a senior.  Had 166 tackles, including 101 solo tackles, 35 tackles for losses, 22 pass hurries, five fumble recoveries, three fumbles caused, three TDs on defense, one interception and one blocked extra point.  "Since the season ended, I have had several coaches tell me that Sam should have been in the Shrine Bowl," said Mt. Tabor coach Bob Sapp.   "All season, coaches came up to me and said they just couldn't figure out a way to block him.  He is not the biggest linebacker you will see, but when Sam gets a good clean shot, he puts every ounce of himself into it."

K.T. Stovall, 6-3, 215, 4.7, Fayetteville, NC (Pine Forest HS) - Defensive End
A two time all Mid South 4-A pick at Pine Forest HS.  Also named to the Fayetteville Observer-Times All Cape Fear Team as a senior.  Had 70 tackles including 11 for losses, six sacks and two fumble recoveries his junior year.   As a senior, Stovall collected 91 tackles including 34 for losses, and 10 sacks.   Also a state powerlifting champion.  Set a state record in the bench press for his weight class.  Pine Forest coach Dean Saffos calls Stovall the best defensive end he has ever coached.  "Appalachian State stole one here," said Saffos.   "The ACC schools seem to recruit based on a model of a 6-6, 260 linemen.   They missed out here."  Stovall is projected as a defensive end at Appalachian.

Jimmy Watkins, 5-11, 198, 4.5, Elberton, GA (Georgia Military College/Elbert Co. HS) - Running Back
Named Northeast Georgia HS Player of the Year as a senior at Elbert County High School.  Also named to AAA All State Team as an all purpose player during his senior year.  Rushed for 1,691 yards and 14 TDs on 259 carries as a senior.  Rushed for a school record 337 yards on 26 carries vs. North Hall HS (scoring runs of 50, 56, 57 yards).  Saw his running average rise from 40 yards per game to over 200 yards per game after his team switched from the veer to the I-formation.   As a DE, Watkins had over 50 tackles, one interception, and two fumble recoveries.   Was a member of Elbert County's 1995 Group AA state championship team during his junior year.  Team advanced to the Group AAA quarterfinals his senior season.   Watkins was Georgia Military's leading rusher the past two seasons and was named to the Georgia Junior College Athletic Association All Region Team this past season.   "Watkins is a big bruiser that has some real good speed in the open field as well," says Elbert County coach T. McFerrin.  Watkins will have two years of eligibility at ASU.

Jose' White, 5-8, 165 Rock Hill, SC (Rock Hill HS) - Running Back/Defensive Back
One of South Carolina's leading rushers as a senior.  Named All Upper South Carolina by the Charlotte Observer.  Has outstanding speed.  Rushed for over 1,800 yards as a senior.  Played in the SC North/South all star game and finished with a game-high 52 yards on 15 carries.  Also played DB in HS.  Strong at man-to-man coverage and excels against taller receivers.
