The track and field season is nearly finished, but Shantia Washington and Vance seem to be just getting started.

In her second meet this season Wednesday, Washington looked well seasoned in helping the Cougars to the team title at the Girls Only Challenge at Providence High. They beat runner-up Providence, 152.5-143 in the 10-team meet. Scotland County (106.5), Myers Park (78) and Garinger (49) completed the top five.

The boys' version of the meet, the Dick Williams Invitational, is Friday at East Mecklenburg.

"I think it gives us a lot of confidence," Washington said. "This is the first time our team has been together and really put our best relays and sprinters together."

Washington anchored the winning 800- (1 minute, 44 seconds) and 1,600-meter relays (4:06.0) to the second-fastest times in the state this season, won the long jump (16 feet, 4 inches) and finished second in the 100 (12.3 seconds).

Washington missed the first part of the season playing on the N.C. 4A finalist basketball team. Rain canceled her first two meets, but she finally ran in Saturday's Chick-fil-A Invitational at Vance.

What Wednesday showed was the threat Vance could be to Harding at next week's ME-CA 8 4A championships and at the 4A West Regionals. Harding did not attend Wednesday's meet.

"I don't like to look forward," said Vance coach Londell McClary when asked about his team's chances at the upcoming meets. "We look at Harding as being one of the premiere teams in the state. If we can compete with them at the conference meet, then we know we can compete with them at regionals, and the state meet will take care of itself."
