2000 INDOOR TRACK:

State Indoor Championships in jeopardy.
Wednesday vote by NCHSAA to determine status of meet,
...and maybe the sport of Indoor Track.

As many of you have learned, Greensboro will no longer host the State Indoor Meet, UNC has no indoor track this winter as their new 200m track opens in 2001, and Appalachian State opens a 250m indoor track in 2001. An indoor track has just been set up in a facility near Winston-Salem and high school meets have been scheduled for this winter. The group that created the facility have offered to host the championship meet. Wednesday (12/1) the NCHSAA will consider not having a 2000 championship meet and is leaning toward eliminating the sport altogether (while considering adding lacrosse and field hockey). Athletes competing for college scholarships with those from other states may find themselves at a disadvantage. Participation is greater than ever in indoor track and few kids who go out for track get cut. Why deprive kids of this opportunity?

If you feel strongly about this, please write the NCHSAA (North Carolina High School Athletic Association) and express your opinions regarding this situation. Information on how to contact them can be found at: www.nchsaa.unc.edu and at www.nchsaa.unc.edu/directory
