AYSO SAFE HAVEN The AYSO Safe Haven Program that is designed to provide child protection (Child Protection Act of 1993) and volunteer protection (Volunteer Protection Act of 1997). To gain protection under the Volunteer Protection Act of 1997, a volunteer must be trained in each of his or her jobs; be certified in child protection and volunteer protection issues by completing the appropriate Safe Haven Certification Course for each of his or her jobs; and, register with AYSO using the latest Volunteer Application Form. Additionally, the volunteer must know the policies, structure, and guidelines of AYSO; be named to the volunteer position; and be given, and operate within, the parameters of a job description. Every region should have a Child and Volunteer Protection Advocate on the regional board to administer the Safe Haven Program within the region. Safe Haven Certification Courses BASIC: Board and Staff Introductory Certification Course This 75-minute course is for regional board members and regional, area, and section staff members. Any instructor in the unified instructor program who has completed BASIC is authorized to teach this course. Safe Haven Coach Certification Course This 3-hour course is for all coaches and was formerly known as the "Level 1 Course." Any instructor in the unified instructor program who has completed the Youth Coaching Course and the Safe Haven Coach Certification Course is authorized to teach this course. Safe Haven Referee Certification Course This 75-minute course is for all current referees. Any instructor in
the unified instructor program who has completed the Regional Referee Course
and the Safe Haven Referee Certification Course is authorized to teach
