WHAT IS

Twins Baseball

Twins baseball represents the Central Peninsula in the Alaska American Legion Baseball Program. The Alaska Program consists of teams statewide. The American Legion Baseball Program both in Alaska and Nationwide is the most competitive baseball program for high school age players. The Alaskan programs are providing the exposure and experience college coaches nationwide are looking for. Nationwide in 1996 there were 4971 teams with one eventually being crowned National Champion. The season runs from mid-May to mid-August. The Twin's Program provides 2 teams consisting of approxamately 40 players.

WHAT DOES THE PROGRAM PROVIDE?

The players are provided the greatest opportunity to attain their realistic goals involving baseball. The natural difference in abilities creates different goals. The levels run from those individuals capable of professional careers, those capable of college participation (including scholarships), and those individuals that are an important part of any high school state championship team. The players also develope lifelong memories and friendships. Players develop an understanding and appreciation for the support of their communities. This allows them to make the full circle and repay their communities through their involvement (coaches, umpires, business sponsors etc.). Basic principles of sports including discipline, maturity and responsibility (as individuals and teammates). Legion baseball allows for participation without academic requirements. This allows those athletes that have difficulty maintaining academic elgibility in other high school sports to still participate and benefit from their abilities. This opportunity has had a major impact on several lives over the past 20 years. Academics are stressed and the necessity of maintaining grades at the high school and collegiate level to maintain progress in a baseball future, (i.e. scholarships both academic and athletic, high school diploma or G.E.D. required by professional sports).

The communities benefit from the return and involvement of the players and their continued desire to be a great place to live. Exposure of the Kenai Peninsula to outside teams and their fans traveling to Alaska provides an economic benefit. The players display a large degree of professionalism in setting aside the year long rivalry that exists amongst our local high schools. They come together as a team and represent the Central Peninsula.

The State of Alaska American Legion Baseball Program benefits from the stability provided by the 20 year Twins Baseball program. Other communities are establishing programs (Seward, Kodiak, Homer) due to their exposure to Twins Baseball.

Even the Nation benefits from the teams exposure to military life ansd awareness that it is not as bad as often thought. Many past Twin's players have gone on to serve our Nation. Americanism is an integral part of the American Legion Baseball Program.
