Hughson flies High
Air attack guns down Escalon

ESCALON - When Kyle Lemings graduates from Hughson High this June, perhaps nobody will be happier than Escalon football coach Mark Loureiro.

Lemings, after going 21 for 23 in a Hughson win last year, threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns as the Huskies downed Trans-Valley League archrival Escalon 21-7 in front of a standing room only crowd of 4,000 at Lloyd C. Engel Field Friday night.

"One of these days you'd think he'd throw an incomplete pass against us." said Loureiro. "He's a big-time player, and players like that make the big plays in big games."

There's no doubt Lemings made most of the big plays, and he started with Hughson's first drive.

"The game plan was to throw the ball a lot." said Hughson coach Scott Ricardo "And Kyle did a nice job for us all night."

After Escalon (5-2, 3-1) was forced to punt on its first drive, Lemings went right to work.

Despite penalties that pushed the Huskies (6-2,4-0) back 35 yards on the drive, Lemings completed six passes to four different receivers for 78 yards. The scoring drive culminated when sophomore Heath Villarreal plunged in from one yard, A missed extra-point kick left the Huskies with a 6-0 lead.

"That first drive was all ball-control passing." said Loureiro. "It took nearly nine minutes and was nearly all passing. I just a helpless feeling on the sidelines."

Hughson scored midway through the second quarter after Escalon quarterback Justin Northcutt fumbled while being sacked.

After two long runs, Lemings hit Colby Self in the end zone from 10 yards out. Lemings passed to Travis Scroggins for the 2 point conversion.

Scronggins was one of seven receivers Lemings used all night. but the main weapon was Self, who caught 11 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns.

"Colby's the man" said Lemings. "But all our receivers got open.... I was so pumped for this game. Maybe my last against our big rival."

Whenever Lemings needed big yardage, he threw a lob to Self, who responded by catching nearly every pass thrown his way.

The Huskies put the game away with nearly six minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Lemings drove Hughson 93 yards for the Huskies' final score, finding Self on the right side of the end zone from seven yards out for a 21-0 lead.

Escalon scored after Kyle martinez picked off a bobbled Lemings pass.

After an impressive drive, Andy Gasper (107 yards rushing) scored from 15 yards out for the final margin.

"I knew we'd be doing a lot of throwing," said Lemings. "But I didn't have a clue I'd throw for over 300 yards. Not against Escalon."

Loureiro was impressed by Lemings, but not surprised. Hes's seen him do it before.

"Their quarterback dictated the entire game," said Loureiro. "We watched him on film, but he hadn't thrown like this all year."

Huskies beat archrival Escalon: all alone on top of TVL

Turlock Journal
From staff reports

ESCALON - Riding the arm of quarterback Kyle Lemings-- who threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns -- the Hughson High School football team took over sole possession of first place in the Trans-Valley League with a 21-7 win over archrival Escalon, Friday night at Escalon High School.

Lemings hit Colby Self on scoring passes of 10 and seven yards, and had a 40 yard score called back due to a penalty. Lemings completed 21 passes -- to seven different receivers -- in 29 attempts.

Self finished with a game-high 11 catches for 192 yards.

The Huskies (4-0 TVL, 6-2 overall) dominated the game offensively, rolling up 471 total yards to just 181 for Escalon (3-0, TVL, 5-2 overall).

Running back Heath Villarreal led the Hughson ground attack with 143 yards and a one yard touchdown run.

Lupe's View

What a game. It had to be one of the most satifying wins we have ever had against Escalon. Last week when I made my pick for the Hughson Chronicle, I was asked if I was picking with my head or was I picking with my heart. Well my heart is with the Huskies, but I have always believed we are the best team in the TVL.

To win by 14 points in Escalon is really incredible. The Cougars don't lose at home much, and this time they were never really in the game. The game plan was really one of the best I've seen in a very long time. I think we all knew that we would be doing a lot of passing, but 318 yards passing in a high school game is really incredible.

Kyle Lemings had a career night passing against Escalon (which I predicted last week). Lemings passed for 318 yards and was 21-29-2. He completed passes to 7 different recievers, 11 to Colby Self for 192 yards.

Heath Villarreal once again went over the 100 yard mark, to finish with 143 yards on 25 carries.

The Huskies are starting to peak going into the last 2 games, and should get quite a run in the playoffs. The Husky offense has now caught up with the defense, and are carrying their share of the load. The defense came real close to shuting out Escalon.

Just a little over a year ago coming into the '97 season many believed Justin Northcutt to be a better qb then Lemings. I think now after almost two complete varsity seasons we all know that Lemings is far and away the better qb. With Lemings and the great Husky receivers, no one can just concentrate on Villarreal's running.

I've been saying it for some time but I expect to be back at UOP for the section final again this year. Many have compared this team with last years state champion team, and keep saying that they aren't near as good. Well we don't have to play that team, and I think we can reach and win the section title with this outstanding group of young men.
