LINDEN -- Hughson's Heath Villarreal outdueled Linden's Eric Lee as the Huskies topped the Lions 45-24, Friday night in a non-league battle at Linden.
Villarreal rushed for 185 yards on 10 carries and four touchdowns. He also returned a punt 75 yards for Hughson's first score.
Lee caught four passes for 109 yards, scored touchdowns and kicked a 22 yard field goal.
The Huskies (2-0) had other options as well.
Hughson's Jeremy Maish scored on a 10 yard touchdown run and quarterback nick Brown connected with Johnny Meyer on a 26 yard reception.
Kyle Martin scored on a five yard touchdown run for Hughson.
The game with Linden matched up two of the best players in the area. Linden's Eric Lee and Hughson's Heath Villarreal put on quite a show. Villarreal started off the show with a brilliant 75 yard punt return for a td. Villarreal finished the night with 4 touchdowns, and rushed 10 times for 185 yards. Lee caught 4 passes for 90 yards and 3 touchdowns, on for 65 yards. Lee also added a field goal and 3 points after, and scored all 24 of the Lions' points.
The offense dominated Linden's defense all the way. The Huskies could have scored anytime they wanted. Villarreal has a strong supporting cast around. Nick Brown continued to grow as the qb, and Eric Banuelos shows that he has the skills to be one of the best recievers in the TVL. Jeremy Maish did a good job in his short stint at qb, running the option well, and scoring a td. The Husky line is smaller than in past years, but proves to be much quicker off the ball then their opponents.
The Huskie defense still needs some work. They gave up some early points, and Hughson was even behind 7-6 very early. Linden run the ball well for most of the first quarter, then the Huskie defense adjusted and pretty much stopped them from then on. Lindens passing game was on of the best in the area, and seemed to be their best chance to get into the game. The defense backs actually did a pretty good job even if they did give up 188 points and 3 tds. The last Linden td was way after the game had been decided and came against our second team defense.
The Huskie coaching staff had a solid game plan for the night. It seemed like Hughson won this game against a weak team, but I suspect that in the next few weeks that Linden will win it's share of games. See you all at Oakdale next week.
