Patterson Tigers
Coach: Craig Bettencourt (54-36-1, 10th year)
TOP RETURNERS: OL/LB Geronimo Flores, 5-10, 210; OL/DL Ryan Reza, 5-11, 210; QB/DB Junior Lopez 6-2, 190; OL/LB OL/LB Justin Oxenrider 6-0, 200; WR/DB Micah Kauer, 6-1 180.
TOP NEWCOMERS: RB Homero Sanchez, 5-8, 160; OL/DL Abraham Arana, 5-10, 200; WR/DB Alex Laurel, 5-8, 155
STRENGTHS: Lopez is a strong quarterback, Flores and Reza will give him time to create. A solid group comes up from last year's co-champion junior varsity team.
WEAKNESSES: After the top returners, no experience. Depth might be a problem, and in the TVL it could turn into a huge problem.

Patterson beat Gustine 19-6 in their 1st game. Junior Lopez completed 11 of 18 passes for 184 yards and 2 tds.Homer Sanchez rushed 26 times for 116 yards.

Last week Patterson beat a very good Hilmar team. They come into the game flying high. They should give the Huskies a good test.

   Bee Staff Reports

PATTERSON - The Hughson High Huskies weren't intimidated by a ranked team or an early deficit Friday night.

Thanks in part to 100 yards and a touchdown on 22 attempts by Heath Villarreal, Hughson recovered to post a 21-6 Trans-Valley League victory over Patterson. The Bee's fifth-ranked small-school team.

The Tigers (3-2, 2-1) jumped to 6-0 lead on a 6 yard run by Homer Sanchez, but Hughson (4-2, 2-0) answered with Villarreal's 33 yard run and the first of three extra points by Jerry Chrisco to take a 7-6 lead at halftime.

   Turlock Journal

PATTERSON - Behind sophomore Heath Villarreal's 100 yards rushing, Hughson defeated Patterson 21-6 in Trans-Valley League action, Friday night at Patterson High School.

Villarreal scored on a 33 yard run in the second quarter. Kyle Lemings added scores on a one yard run and a 32 yard yard pass to Ryan Martin in the third quarter to seal the win.

Lupe's View

Hey did anyone notice all that press coverage we got for Friday's game? The Hughson vs. Patterson game had to be one of the best games in the area friday, and the Modesto Bee gave us three paragraphs and the Turlock Journal a whopping 2 paragraphs. Central played a mismatch against Gustine, wins by a 64-0 score, and the Bee is all over that. They even called it a laugher! Good coverage Modesto Bee. NOT!

The Huskies played a determined Patterson team on friday. It was a real physical game. Patterson scored first after blocking a Hughson punt (neither the Bee nor the Journal told you that). It was settling into a defensive struggle till Heath Villarreal finally broke loose on a 33 yard run, Jerry Chrisco kicked the pat and that was all Hughson needed from then on.

QB Kyle Lemings scored on a 1 yard run in the third quarter. Ryan Martin scored his first Husky touchdown, to close the scoring. Colby Self and Ed Parmenter made some big catches, continuing their solid job at the receiver positons. Heath Villarreal rushed 23 times for 115 yards, to put him at 603 yards on the season. I don't have the final passing stats for the game, but Lemings should be close to the 1000 yard mark.

Hughson had a good mix of passing and rushing plays for the night. The Huskies worked to establish the run, not always successful at first, but it set up the passing game and then the run worked fine. Villarreal had 40 yards of rushing called back on penaltys.

The defense was great on the night, giving up a total of 60 yards for the game. Luke Avila and Jerry Chrisco were all over the field and made several big plays. Leon Compton and Layton McDonald also were big play makers on the night. And I can't forget Defensive Coordinater Derek Ross (mostly cause he won't let me), he's the man responsible for the Wild Dog D.

Next week we play Hilmar. Hilmar 2 weeks ago looked like the team to beat in the TVL. Now they'll be fightin for their lives against Hughson, which will make them all that more dangerous. The Huskies should handle them fairly well. The Hilmar line just isn't as physical as ours. The physical play is what sets us apart from the other TVL schools, along of course with Escalon, and Ripon.

One last note. I didn't see the shotgun this week. I hope it's gone for good. Some how I think we'll see it again.
