Ed McDowell Wins DecathaJAM Competition

Wins three events to take crown

YONKERS, N.Y. (June 22, 2002) -- Ed McDowell overcame an early 16-6 deficit to Tom Dever, as the former All-America rugby player erupted for 38 points and thereby captured the crown as the champion of the DecathaJAM, a 10-event skills competition held in honor of the 10th anniversary of The JAM.

McDowell made his move in the Log Toss and the Beer Chug, earning a first place finish in each event for a total of 20 points. The E-Dogg cemented his victory by taking top honors in the Running the Bases event with a time of 12.56 seconds. McDowell also participated in the Distance Throw and the Long Drive, in which he finished third and fifth, respectively.

All participants in the DecathaJAM were permitted to enter a total of five events.

"I’m honored to be the DecathaJAM champion," McDowell said after donning the crown given to the victor. "I’m glad that we finally have an award at The JAM that is based exclusively on merit and objective criteria, and is not in the subjective hands of the racist JAM Committee."

Joe E’ O’Leary and Rob Andrusco finished second and third behind McDowell, but neither seriously challenged E-Mac. Joe E. earned a total of 28 points by placing in all five events in which he entered, including second-place finishes in Spitting for Distance and Beef Jerky Eating, and fourth place finishes in the Beer Chug, Running the Bases and the Ultimate Event (along with Chris Spellman).

Andrusco earned points in four events, including first-place honors in Beef Jerky Eating (in which Andrusco so intimidated the rest of the field with his technique that only four participants completed the event), a second-place finish the Beer Chug and fourth-place finishes in each of Spitting for Distance and the Long Drive.

The winners of the other individual events were George McShane (Throwing for Accuracy and the Long Drive), R.T. McShane (Distance Throw), John Lyte (Over-225-pound 100 Yard Dash), and the team of Mike Campoli and Chris Blakely (Ultimate Event). Brad Sherman paced the field in Spitting for Distance even though he spat what appeared to be a Cheeto snack puff.

The Spitting for Distance event generated a mixed reaction from the spectators, as some were heard asking, "What’s next, seeing who can fart the loudest?"

The most memorable moment of the DecathaJAM occurred during the Log Toss, when Dan Evans threw the log with such force that the log snapped in half upon impact with the ground. After much discussion, the participants determined that the event would continue with each participant getting one toss with the larger half of the original log.

Also noteworthy was the valiant effort of Andrusco in the Over-225-pound 100 Yard Dash, in which he attempted to make up the difference between his weight and 225 pounds by carrying Matt Fornabaio on his back. The Andrusco/Fornabaio team finished sixth despite the extra weight.

John Lyte and George McShane finished in a fourth place tie with 24 points apiece, while Tom Dever and R.T. McShane each earned 22 points.
