18th September 1998 - Cooksey and Comyn to go

John Baldwin has placed two of Hednesford's best players on the transfer list. Scott Cooksey (keeper) and Andy Comyn (defender) have been made available after failing to agree terms to sign new contracts. Reports are circulating linking Comyn with Cheltenham and Cooksey with no less than Leicester City. Scott Cooksey and Andy Comyn have been two of Hednesford's most consistent performers during our Conference years, and are two players we can't afford to be without. In my opinion if we can't hold on to players like these we can not seriously expect to be fighting for promotion. Perhaps we can not expect to compete with Premiership teams, but if we can't hold our own financially against the likes of Cheltenham we will stay in the Conference for ever.

Link here for What Rebel, the Slough fan, does say should be a warning to any of us who complacently feel that our clubs are safe, particularly those of us who have a Chairman with a lot of personal power over the club. Slough, after all, were not far off a top 6 place and came within touching distance of Wembley last season.
