The fourth-to-last week in NASCAR's silly season is at Rockingham, NC. After Charlotte and Talladega, it's time for some short-track action in the nation's greatest state. Throw out the restrictor plates, get some extra thick brakes and tires.

This track is all about handling. If your car is handling well, you've got a shot to win. Poor handling guarantees a poor finish. And just having good handling doesn't do it for you. You have to know what you're doing on this 1.017-mile track. The turns come up quickly, so you have to time your moves just right. And people get lapped like crazy here, and lapped traffic can always create problems.

Yeah yeah, regular stars like Jarrett, Gordon, Martin, Burton, Labonte, Wallace, and Stewart are decent picks for this week. Do with them what you will. The real picks, however, will be for guys who've gotten hot lately and for guys who've always been hot at this track.

Check out Ricky Rudd. After crashing and bashing and exploding his way through the first two-thirds of the season, he's really stepped up his racing. He's gotten several top ten finishes, and he was third just last week. He's a great short-track driver -- his win last year came at Martinsville, another short track. He won the pole position here in the spring, and he won the fall race here back in 1996.

Another guy who's had success here is Kyle Petty. He won it three out of four races in the early 90's, and he's been doing pretty well the second half of this year.

And then you've got to consider the loser drivers who seem to get into the top five at short tracks. Kenny Wallace has done that several times this year, and Kevin Lepage could do it, too. Steve Park and Chad little are also candidates. Even Joey Joe Joe Nemechek could do it, if he doesn't wreck his car getting it out of the trailer.

So pick like the wind, and make your picks count. Every point matters now.

Instructions

First of all, choose your name from the pull-down list. Then pick the names of the drivers that you think will finish in the top five. After that, you get to make your surprise pick, where you'll name a guy who isn't high in the points, but you think has a shot to get into this week's top five. It doesn't have to be one of the names you've already put in your top five. Now that the season is in full swing, let's use the current Winston Cup Points standings. Click here to check out the nicely done standings page at nascar.com. Remember, your surprise pick can't be any of the names listed in the TOP TEN of the points standings.

And hey, don't forget to pick a DNF. That's the guy you think will get a big fat Did Not Finish.

Click on the upside-down triangle at the right margin of each blank to see a list of drivers, then select a name. No typing necessary. Don't forget to tell me your name!
