The New York Rangers selected Jim in the fourth round (67th overall) of the 1989 Entry Draft.

On March 5, 1991, he was traded with Kevin Miller and Dennis Vial to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Joe Kocur and Per Djoos. Jim made his NHL debut with the Red Wings in 1991-92, accumulating seven penalty minutes in one game. Through seven games in 1992-93, he tallied one goal, one assist, and 58 penalty minutes.

On June 20, 1993, he was traded with a draft pick to the
Philadelphia Flyers for Greg Johnson. During 1993-94, Jim scored one goal and two assists in 22 games for the Flyers.

On March 18, 1994, he was traded with a draft pick to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Rob DiMaio. Jim finished the season playing in four games for the Lightning. In 1994-95, he notched one goal and 41 penalty minutes in 10 games.

On Feb. 22, 1995, he was traded with Jeff Buchanan and Tom Tilley to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Paul Ysebaert and Rich Sutter. Through 27 games with Chicago in 1994-95, Jim scored three goals and one assist. In 1995-96, he scored two game-winning goals and four assists, adding 180 penalty minutes. Through 65 games in 1996-97, he recorded career-highs with six goals, six assists, and 12 points.

On March 4, 1998, he was traded with Keith Carney to the Phoenix Coyotes in exchange for Jay More and Chad Kilger. Between the two teams in 1997-98, Jim established career-highs in games (75) and penalty minutes (225). He also played in his 200th NHL game and recorded his 900th NHL penalty minute during 1997-98.

Saturday June 26, 1999, Jim was traded to the Montreal Canadiensfor a 6th round draft pick in the 1999 draft.
Prior to making his professional debut, Jim played three seasons with Michigan State University of the CCHA. From 1988-91, he registered 20 goals, 21 assists, and 302 penalty minutes in 105 games for the Spartans. In 1991-92, he played his first professional season with Adirondack of the AHL, where he tallied seven goals, 13 assists, and 338 penalty minutes in 65 games en route to winning the Calder Cup Championship.

Jim enjoys golfing and working out during the off-season. He is originally from Dearborn, Michigan.
