Advice For Autographers

1. Always use blue sharpie on photos and cards. Black pen tends to fade over time especially on cards.

2. Wear comfortable shoes. This may seem like rather odd advice but you'll thank me after you've been standing around the ballpark for hours and chasing after taxi cabs.

3. Be prepared. You should never go away from an autographing trip without at least one autograph, even if the autograph is of a third stringer or bench player. The Internet provides a wealth of information and most teams have team sites that will keep you informed of the roster, coaches, injured players, and even broadcasters (many of which are former professionals). Find your favorite teams and bookmark them. Of course, you'll want to bookmark this site also! After you've seen the roster, you can grab any cards, photos, magazines, etc. to bring to the ballpark to get signed.

4. Keep your expectations realistic. Some days you may walk away with few autographs and other days the autographs will be plentiful. Don't go autographing expecting only to acquire the star player's autograph because you generally will come away disappointed.

5. Arrive early to the ballpark or hotel. Some players like to come to the park extremely early. Nothing is worse than a missed opportunity. Also, many parks and stadiums have promotions where players will sign autographs before the game. You will never know who is signing for those promotions until you arrive for the game. Many times the players will be bench players like Andy Toolson or Felton Spencer (nice guys but not real valuable autographs) but the big guys may occassionally sign, like Karl Malone.

6. Have fun. This is a fun and exciting hobby. Don't go into autographing with the expectation of getting rich or retiring in 5 years by selling your autographs. Autograph because you like it!
