IceHound History

The IceHounds ownership, Yukon Sports Managment, obtained an expansion franchise in the NWHF in 1997. The NWHF (New World Hockey Federation) was the forerunner of the THL. The team was set to play in the "minor" league of the NWHF. However, before the season began, the Hamilton Havoc went bankrupt. This allowed Yukon Sports Managment to take control of the Hamilton team.

The team was quickly moved to New Orleans and named the New Orleans Aces. The Aces ended with a sub .500 record. With fan support dwindling, the club looked for a new beginning when the NWHF reinvented itself as the current THL. So the Aces packed up and moved North to Edmonton.

Covert Operation

'Hounds Grab Jeff Covert in Draft

The Edmonton IceHounds used their first round draft pick to aquire Jeff Covert from the Dayton Flyers of the TRHL.  Covert is a gifted Left Winger who finished second in the TRHL scoring race last year.  Covert is equally at home scoring or soring on his opponents.  Last year he netted 43 goals and 26 assists.  When he wasn't scoring on the other team, he was busy pumelling them into submission. Jeff led the TRHL in penalty minutes with 173!

The 'Hounds were able to snag the highly regarded rookie because they lost veteran Centre Rhett Supino to the Winnipeg Shock, thereby aquiring Winnipeg's first round pick.

"We wish Rhett continued success in his career with the Winnipeg Shock", said GM Haggar at the recent THL Draft, "I am sure his leadership on and off the ice will have an immediate impact with the Shock."

An original IceHound, Supino has played his entire 7 year career for the 'Hounds.  He leaves the team as the all time leader in Powerplay Goals with 84.

IceHound management was pleasantly surprised to find Goaltender Alvin Taulbee still available when their turn came up in the Goalie Draft.  Taulbee was a workhorse for Brandon last year.  He finished in the top 3 of all the major goaltending statistics.

"We expect that Alvin will give Micheal Portner a real challenge in training camp for the #1 goaltender job."

Roy Kochmanski was the top Defenseman taken by the IceHounds in the draft.  Kochmanski was noted for his booming slapshot while playing for Spokane last season.  He notched 11 goals and 32 assists with a +19 rating.  It is hoped that Kochmanski can help fill the void left by the retirement of "Big" Denver Souffron.
