Nearly ten years ago, while doing a crossword puzzle, I came upon the clue "1940 batting champ." After exhausting my knowledge of great and near-great hitters of the era, I finally gave in and looked up the answer. That's when I met Debs. I guess it was the combination of his unique first name and the fact that I had never heard of him that piqued my interest. So I researched, only to discover that little has been written about this fine ballplayer other than what one can find in the statistical record. Therefore, in collaboration with many gratious visitors to this site, I have embarked on a quest to preserve some history of Debs' baseball career.

So here it is, a shrine to a man perhaps best described as the Ken Oberkfell of his era (with a batting title of course!). Any information you may have about him would be greatly appreciated and may be forwarded to me at debsgarms@yahoo.com.

Up on the roof
Sunset, Texas, Jan. 15, 1941 (AP-Wirephoto) -- Debs Garms of the Pittsburgh Pirates, champion batter of the National League, is toughening up his bats by exposing the hickorys (sic) to the weather on his farm here. "It hardens them," he explained as he squatted on the shingle roof and examined the bats that connected for a percentage of .355 last year.
