SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Ground Squirrel officials are
still concerned, but it appears the team may be righting itself a bit.
The Squirrels, who rocketed to fourth from ninth
after the second stats came out, likely won't remain so high after this
stats period, GM Matt Thompson says, but the groundwork is being established
for a successful season.
"It's likely we'll fall further back into the pack
this period," Thompson said. "I just don't think we're as good at this
point as the standings indicate.
"However, our hitters are beginning to produce,
and within a few weeks I think we'll be right back up there ... this time
for good."
Injuries to SS Nomar Garciaparra and 2B Quilvio
Veras have severely cut into the team's stolen base production ... currently
problem No. 1 for the Squirrel brass. But Thompson said no desperation
trade will be made ... at least not yet.
"We have some people in Danville who might be able
to help," Thompson said. "Of course, if the right offer comes along, we'll
listen to all comers."
