1999 Packer Free Agency

The Green Bay Packers have only a few free agents that they need to sign this year. Antonio Freeman is their biggest free agent and he has been given the franchise tag. Last year the Packers gave Dorsey Levens the franchise tag and they didn't sign him until the start of the season. The result, in his second game Dorsey broke his leg. Now, had Dorsey been in camp all summer he would have been used to the hits and the chances of that injury happening would have been lower. Hopefully they won't do the same thing with Antonio Freeman. Freeman , other than Favre, was the best offensive player on the Packers the last 3 years. He always comes up with big plays in big games. Signing Freeman is very important.

The other free agent that the Packers must sign is William Henderson. Even though Henderson didn't have as great a year as he had in 97, Henderson is a must sign. He knows the offense andhe has blocked for Levens in the past.

The Packer have already signed the other two free agents that they needed to sign. Santana Dotson has been the most consistent defensive linemen for the Packers the last 3 seasons. He doesn't get the most sacks or the most tackles but he is always there to make the play. George Koonce is the other key player that they signed this offseason. Koonce has had solid years at Linebacker the last 2 seasons and has recovered nicely from an ACL injury that threatened to end his career 3 years ago.

Green bay has also lured OG Raleigh McKenzie from the San Diego Chargers with a 4 yr, $6 million contract. McKenzie has started at guard for the Chargers the last 14 seasons and should be a solid replacement for Adam Timmerman, who was lost to the Rams this offseason.

Running Backs Darick Holmes and Travis Jervey would be nice for the Packers to keep, but Ron Wolf expects both to sign with other teams by the end of the free agent signing period.
