1999 Packer Playoffs
Packers Lose to 49ers
on Controversial Call
1-3-99
The Green Bay Packers lost today because of a officials miscall. 2 plays
after a clear fumble by Jerry Rice, Steve Young connected with Terrell
Owens on a 30 yard TD pass to put the 49ers up for good with 3 seconds
remaining in the game.
The
series before Brett Favre had led the Pack downfield, with key passes
to Corey Bradford and Antonio Freeman before Favre finally connected
with Freeman to put the Packers up 27-23.
The
Packers started the game with a opening scoring drive. Favre passed
precisely and Dorsey Levens pounded out yardage up the middle. At the
end of the drive the Packers had to settle for a field goal by Ryan
Longwell.
After
shutting the 49ers down on the next series, Green Bay got the ball back,
only for it to be fumbled away by Dorsey Levens. After getting the ball
deep in Packers territory, 49ers quarterback Steve Young threw a TD
to Tight End Greg Clark, nope, no relation to Dwight Clark.
The
Packers next scoring oppurtunity came late in the first quarter. Dorsey
Levens had a 17-yard run and a 22 yard run before Favre hit Antonio
Freeman on a 2 yard post pattern for the touchdown to put the Packers
up 10-7.
The
next 49ers series was stopped by a Darren Sharper interception that
was caused because of Tyrone Williams perfect coverage. But the 49ers
defense held and the next series, the 49ers kicked a field goal to tie
the game at 10-10.
After
a missed Longwell field goal, and a defensive stand by the Packers,
Roell Preston was ready to receive a punt. Preston decided to fumble
the punt and the 49ers recovered once again. But the Packers were saved
once again, this time by a George Koonce interception.
The
Packers went into halftime with a 17-10 lead after Levens scored on
a touchdown run. Dwight Clark scored the next touchdown for the 49ers.
2 field goals by Wade Richey, one by Ryan Longwell and the rest is history.
