Information Wanted!

Ormondville Rail Preservation Group wishes to learn more on the background of Ormondville station and the activities that surrounded it. For example, we are compiling lists of the names of former staff and their periods of service. As there are cases of staff shifting between local stations, this has been extended to the no longer extant Makotuku and Kopua Stations, as well as Matamau Station, which is also under our care.

Railway Staff

Who am I?
Some say that I could be Stationmaster Unsworth.

We already have information – often gained from archival and newspaper searches - on a number of early staff members. Possibly, therefore, we may even be able to fill in gaps for site visitors who have family links to Ormondville. Gradually we are adding fairly basic genealogical material to this website.

Naturally, we are also keen to learn more on the backgrounds of various items now owned by ORPG, and also to trace the fate of items associated with the station and its precinct in the past. Perhaps some of these things survive today and are no longer wanted. Perhaps they are wanted, but may be copied.

Photos taken at or associated with the station, the railway through Southern Hawkes Bay, and industries that used it (e.g. sawmilling, farming) are also very much of interest to ORPG. That faded and somewhat crumpled picture of great grandma and her babies boarding the train at Ormondville, may, for example, prove to include some important structural detail of the station that we seek. Of course, it certainly records a view of Ormondville station’s ever-so-important contribution in the district’s social history. Please email us if you can help.
