Following the loss of the Otene - Waaka Challenge Trophy to Army, by 8 - 6, at the ANZAC Test curtain raiser, the RNZN Rugby League team was out to avenge hurt pride and secure "Senior Service" status from all comers and the setting was ripe at Inter Services 98 held at Burnham Military Camp. Taking on the RNZAF Rugby League saw Navy down at the half by 16 - 12, but Navy dug deep to draw at 20 all by the final whistle earning them the day's rest in preparation for the New Zealand Army Rugby League game and hopefully restored pride from the ANZAC Test curtain raiser.
After resting for the day the final game, and winners spot, for the Inter Services was upon all. The Army drew first blood with an Intercept and runaway try and then the points mounted. Down 16 nil by the half, tactics were talked and a new plan of attack was devised which saw Navy go over the line to regain some pride, but the damage was already done and the Army took out the competition by 52 - 10.
The selectors saw some potential seeing 4 players selected for the 1998 NZDF Rugby League team.
