MVP Of The Month

May 1998

No person has been followed so closely since Orel Hershiser had his consecutive scoreless streak in 1988, but Mark McGwire has the attention of all baseball fans this season as he is on track in pursuit of Roger Maris' record for most home runs in a season. Through the end of May, Mc Gwire is on pace to demolish this record, a feat that has been untouched longer than the gap between in which Maris broke Babe Ruth's record (34 years).

Through May 31 and with the season one-third completed, the Cardinals record was a mediocre 28-26, but there is no telling where they would be without the fan support generated by the contributions of Mc Gwire. At month's end, he was 9 HRs ahead of Maris through the same number of games, yet he is also on pace to break the record for most RBI in a season and is within reach of Babe Ruth's record for highest slugging percentage in a season.
