1996 & 1997 MLS CHAMPIONS - D.C. UNITED
First DC United Game
|
...

After a long grueling season's end...soccer is BaCk! Just in time to see the new teams in the MLS, the Chicago Fire and Miami Fusion. Plus what other way to start the new MLS season than to have the veteran champion team, D.C. United face the more newer unexperienced team, Miami Fusion. Don't get me wrong, I know Miami will have new players that have been on the older MLS teams, but how will fan support be, how will new teamates work together, and how the heck am I gonna pronounce "Fusion"?!! (fuscia, fishing, fashion, sushi?!). Not only do Miami and Chicago have a fresh beginning in the league but so do other teams. A lot of quality players became free agents after the end of the season.

As for the UNITED, Maessner, Ilmer, Kelderman, Diaz Arce, and others have gone their seperate ways. We will miss 'em, but we will have to see who's gonna replace 'em. Maessner was one of my faves, and don't count out the all-around Diaz Arce, who had a big following here in the DC area. The other players had also contributed to the DC fame in some way. I will surely watch the game on Friday, March 14 when the conest is between the Miami Fusion and DC United. It should be interesting to see...DON'T Miss it!

Salvadoran Soccer Star Revolutionized!
|
They just keep dropping like flies...the DC United players, I mean. With such names as Rammel, Causey, Maessner, and now the one and only...Raul Diaz Arce. I know he's an above average player with his ups and downs...who in some games he's a genius and in some games he runs out of gas. He has dearted from the Champion team to lead on a new charge as a Revolutionary. No, I'm not talking about a war here, I'm talking about the Lalas Bunch, the New England Revolution. Many fans are very disappointed that he had not stayed with the United team. I hope there won't be any empty seats at RFK this season. But I know for sure, fans of Raul Diaz Arce will still show up for games. Who is going to replace the missing piece of the Magic Triangle...Moreno-Etcheverry-?????. Last I heard, two Peruvian soccer players were heading towards the capitol, maybe to join the team. Who knows, maybe one of them could become that magic piece that should bring back the spirit of putting goal after goal after goal up on the score board. Even without the Salvadoran star, team spirit should remain among the loyal United fans. WAIT! Or could local MetroStar/Galaxy player A.J. Wood replace Diaz Arce?!...There is only one way to tell, watch the first game AND the home opener against the Kansas City Wizards.
