Program Description

THE UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
Ohio State strives to be on the cutting edge of student trainer education, providing our students with diverse opportunities to develop and enhance their athletic training skills through a coeducational internship program.

Although Ohio State does not offer a degree in Athletic Training, however, students are prepared to sit for the N.A.T.A. Certification Examination and are eligible for Licensure in the State of Ohio. Ohio State offers the required courses for eligibility as well as excellent practical experience. this, coupled with a bachelors degree in a variety of fields, prepares our graduates to be mainstreamed into one of the many sports medicine careers.

While a part of our athletic training staff, each student is provided additional opportunities to enhance athletic training knowledge through classes, inservice training, and quarterly research assignments.

As students progress through the program, many student trainers are compensated and can earn additional monetary awards through the Ohio State Athletic Training Program, National, District, and State Athletic Training Organizations, and college work study programs. Compensated practical experience is readily available through employment at Ohio High School Athletic Association Championship events and other competitions hosted on campus.

First year members of our student training staff report in August to work with the football team. During the course of the year, each first year student is then sent to work in one of our satellite training rooms. Our goal is to have each student see a variety of injuries and work with each of our full time staff members in order to increase each student trainer's knowledge base.

As student trainers advance through the program, they can earn more responsibility and become canadites for Head Student Trainer positions with one or more of Ohio State's varsity athletic teams. Assignments include administering primary care and management of sport injuries and supervision of individual rehabilitation programs. Coverage of practices, games, and travel are additional duties required by a Head Student Trainer
