The ratings are finally starting to make an upswing! No horse
in last week's top 5 is there this week, and the scramble for #1
almost ensures that next week's #1 will have a value over 60.
Papelillo becomes the first foriegn bred horse to become the #1
horse on the top 500 list, thanks to two consecutive first place
performances preceded by two second place performances.

Bert's Bubbleator joined Costner to become the second horse to
beat Air Mike at Churchill Downs and later become the #1 rated
horse in the weekly Top 500 list.
"Green Stamp will be happy to hear about this" the Bubbleator
joked with this interviewer, mentioning another midlevel claimer
who insulted Air Mike in the 'ville.
As mentioned in the Breaking News segment of this page, the
Bubbleator becomes the first one-eyed horse to even crack the
top 5, much less become #1.
"It's better to lose an eye than other things," he commented,
refering to the odd fact that he is still a horse, even though
he has little breeding value.
Trumps Clown and Frosted Morn swapped places to round out the
top 3.

popping up as the highest new entrant, it's because I use 2
different sorts using 2 different languages, and it treats the
' differently in both. I'll try to fix this if I get some time,
but it really doesn't affect the list, just this little

It was a crazy week at Turfway, as well as for the top 500 list.
Cinnamon Pass finished second in all three previous rated races.
But the consitency and a victory this week proved to be too
much, as Accelerated Time and Storm Bound(now unraced for 22
days) took 2 weeks off.
"This list sucks," Road to Attack bellowed as he fell further
into oblivion. The former #1 is now #1810.

Storm Bound won her third race in a row(her forth consecutive
placing in the money) to overtake Costner as #1 for the week of
1/24/97. She had little time to celebrate, however, being
immediately hustled off. The reason? She was claimed out of the
race for $17,500 by the crafty Bernard Flint.
"I'm excited about the move," Storm Bound told Horse Racing
Central. "Bernie's excellent. I'm looking forward to stepping
up out of the claim ranks."
Royal Ensign won his third in a row as well to move into second
place. Costner, unraced this week, dropped from first to forth.

Costner, the former $8,000 claimer who has been making a big
impression recently on the Kentucky circuit, won last Sunday's
feature at Turfway Park to overtake #1 in this week's Top 500
list.
"Dwayne has done a fantastic job with me," the 6 year old
Society Max gelding commented, refering to his trainer Dwayne
Rees. "I feel 4 again."

Road to Attack's clunker cost him 9 points. Copper Queen won her
third straight race in a row. Horse Racing Central now has a
new #1.
"She's racing against weak competition" Road to Attack moaned
after finding out he had dropped to #2 in the weekly poll. "Let
her step up into open competition and watch her get smoked!"
Copper Queen was a little more professional about the ordeal.
"He's just hurt right now. He's only 3; he'll be back."
Copper Queen defeated former #1 Crimson Flagship to push her
point total to a poll leading 70.967 in a conditioned allowance
race at Turfway Park on 1/10, the same day Road to Attack bombed
in The Florence to drop his total to 62.409. Had Road to Attack
not raced, he would still be #1 in the rankings. Had he won, he
would have pushed his point total over 100.
"It's good to know he's mortal," commented April Gator, who took
the week off and remained #3 for the second week in a row. "I
thought we'd never catch him"
