All About The Mariners....
Updated: May 7, 1997
Kingdome History
Way back in 1976, the King County Domed Stadium was opened. One year later, the
Seattle Mariners would be incepted into the league and would call it home. The playing field
measures 331ft. down the leftfield line, 405 straight away, and 312 down the rightfield line.
The Leftcenter and Rightcenter alleys measure 389ft and 380 ft. respectively. The padded blue wall
is 8 feet 6 inches in height all around until right, where the height increases dramatically to 23ft.(because
of the scoreboard). The Mariners still call the Kingdome home today, despite many problems
like loose tiles, and malfunctioning speakers. The seating capacity is 59,166, and the dome has a museum,
a kids arcade, a deli, just to name a few. It's located on 201 South King Street in Seattle Washington. The Kingdome has an artificial
surface (Astroturf) and a very high ceiling. In about four years, a new stadium
will be built for the Mariners complete retractable roof, and natural grass.
Team History
The team was inducted into the league in 1977, and played their first game
In the Kingdome against the Angels on April 6 of that year. Ken Griffey Sr.
and Ken Griffey Jr. were the first father son duo to play in a game together, on the same
lineup. The first no hitter ever for the Mariners came in 1990, when the Big Unit
blanked Detroit. The Mariners are also the first club to be owned by
a Japanese company.(Nintendo) This happened a couple of years back in 1992 when the
original owners sold because of financial problems.
