MY JEWISH PAGE

I attend a synagogue in Hove. I have attended Hebrew School too and had my Bat Mitzvah on the 8 August 1998.

I will be updating this page with information about my Bat Mitzvah and as much of what I learned.

Here are some things that I learnt:

That "Bar Mitzvah" literally means "son of the commandment." "Bar" is "son" in Aramaic. "Mitzvah" is "commandment" in both Hebrew and Aramaic. "Bat" is daughter in Hebrew and Aramaic.

Under Jewish Law children do not have to observe the commandments even though we are encouraged to do so as much as possible to prepare for when we will have to as adults. At the age of 13 (12 for girls) children become responsible to observe the commandments. The Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony formally marks this responsibility. Also that the Bar or Bat Mitzvah now has the right to take part in leading religious services, to count in a minyan (the minimum number of people needed to perform certain parts of religious services), to form binding contracts, to testify before religious courts and to marry.

I learnt to chant all the blessings and my Torah portion which was "The Ten Commandments".
