A.C.W. in Florida Keys |
If you go on holiday to Florida and
you can get down to Key West there are a few places you could visit if
you are interested in the
American Civil War. |
FORT ZACHARY TAYLOR STATE PARK
The Fort is located at the rear of Trumans Estate on the Island. You drive through the estate to the naval yard, there is a small Fee to enter $5-10 for your car and all occupants. If you have members of your family with you who have no interest in the Fort there's no problem as there is a nice little beach, shaded picnic area and a small shop for drinks etc. Also parking can be expensive in Key West you can leave your car there and walk into the Old Town area or Trumans Little White House. The fort was abandonded for many years but is now having restoration work carried out on it.During the second World War the floor was removed and modern anti aircraft guns fitted, but a large part of the fort remains, including one of the largest finds of artillery shell from the Civil War. Although Florida was a Confererate State the Fort was a Federal one thus making Key West under "occupation" to the people who lived there. |
EAST MARTELLO TOWER
If you take the "OLD TOWN TOUR BUS" it stops at the tower where there is a Museum and Art Gallery. You will find some civil war artifacts in the museum, and stories of the local people during the time of the "occupations" etc. |
FORT JEFFERSON NATIONAL MONUMENT
Fort Jefferson is a place you don't want to miss.It is in the "DRY TORTUGAS National Park". It is only accessible by boat or plane as it is about 70 miles from Key West. The boat trip is a good way to get there,a longer journey than the plane but a nice relaxing time with the drinks supplied. When you first arrive the park rangers give you a very informative tour. Then if you don't want to go snorkeling you can take a good look round on your own, and there is plenty to see. A picnic is included in your trip so you don't have to take anything with you,the crew that take you out to the island are very helpful. |
Here are some Photographs we took when we visited the Fort. |
