Well, in case you haven't noticed, I love Yin-Yangs. I don't know why. They're just really cool.
Basically, Yin's the dark part, and Yang's the lighter part. They're supposed to be opposites. There are many different theories for what they stand for:
good/bad
love/hate
"Yin is conceived of as earth, female, dark, passive, and absorbing; it is present in even numbers, in valleys and streams, and is represented by the tiger, the colour orange, and a broken line./ Yang is conceived of as heaven, male, light, active, and penetrating; it is present in odd numbers, in mountains, and is represented by the dragon, the colour azure, and an unbroken line."
complimentary energies
We don't really know when this whole thing started, but there was a Yin-Yang school (school of cosmology) in China in 300 B.C.
