AWARDING INSIGNIA TO BROWNIES

1. CERTIFICATES: We found that when we gave out windows and outlooks there always seemed to be one or two Brownies that either lost them on the way home or left them behind at our meeting place. We decided to make large certificates that we staple the outlook or window to. The certificate says "Congratulations on earning your "(name of window or outlook)" and then we write their name. We add clip art that relates to the window or outlook to the certificate and find once they get home and take off the insignia that many are proud to keep the certificates! Since starting this system our Brownies haven’t lost one on the way home and if they do leave it behind we know whom it belongs to! This system only works if you have the extra paper and access to a copier.

2. BALLOON AWARDS:One group puts the awards for a Brownie in a balloon, blows it up, ties it with a string, and writes the Brownie name on the balloon. When the Brownie gets home she can burst the balloon and there are her windows/outlooks/crests etc., safely home. Sounds like a fun and inventive way to do it although you’d want to make sure she hangs on tight if there is a really strong wind outside!

3. AWARD NECKLACES: Another group I know of has a name tag necklace for each girl. It is the kind that has the plastic holder attached to a string. Girls are encouraged to tuck it into their pocket or Brownie Purse when they get home and wear it each week to Brownies. When the Brownie receives insignia it is placed inside the plastic name tag holder necklace.

4. STAPLING TO SASH: We heard from a Brownie group that found by the time parents got around to sewing on the Outlook or Window they had misplaced it. The Leaders in this group literally staple the Outlook or Window to the badge sash before the Brownies leave the meeting place. That way the parent knows exactly where it is when they find time to sew it on and where it goes! The Brownie can start wearing it proudly right away! The only down side I can see is you would have to make sure you use good staples that close completely to avoid injury to the Brownie.

5. SEWING NIGHTS: Another group said they award insignia once per month and girls receiving badges stay after Brownies to sew them on. Personally I haven't had much luck with Brownies and needles and thread, but I imagine if you have enough help it is possible!

Let us know if you have any interesting ways you award insignia. We love to post it here for other groups to read about!
