WHAT BROWNIES EARN

(see page 21 in her Brownie Book for placement on badge scarfe)

1. TITLE TAPE: When she joins she receives a title tape that indicates the unit she is a member of. In our case it would say 72nd Hamilton Unit.

2. CIRCLE EMBLEM: Shown is emblem from the Fairy Circle.

Brownie units are divided into smaller groups. The smaller group is called a Circle. Each Circle has its own special emblem, name and song. See pages 8 & 9 in her Brownie Book for examples of different circles.

3. CIRCLE LEADER OR CIRCLE SECOND: Each circle has an older Brownie who is the Circle Leader. Her helper is called the Circle Second. When a Brownie becomes a Circle Second she gets 1/2 of a circle and when she becomes the Circle Leader she gets the other half. The Grade 3 Brownies and the Leaders vote on which older Brownies they feel are good examples for the younger Brownies and who would make good Leaders.

4. ENROLLMENT PIN: She will earn this when she is enrolled into Brownies!

5. SERVICE STAR: She will earn a service star for every year she is involved in Guiding. For instance if she was in Sparks for two years and one year in Brownies, she will get a 3 year star in the Spring.

6. WINDOWS: Brownies complete program work by opening and widening their windows on three main subjects, 'People, Outdoors, and Today & Tomorrow'. If your Brownie attends regularly, she will complete opening and widening of windows in a 2 year period. We prefer that she cover windows at the meeting place. However, if she is absent you may work with her at home to catch her up. (Please send in a note stating what you covered and the method used, or a description of what you did with her, and we will sign her book as having completed it.) Windows will be presented as soon after earning them as possible. Windows should be placed on the FRONT OF THE BADGE SCARFE, making sure you leave enough space to put the top part (widening) on when she earns it. They are colour co-ordinated so you will know which one goes above which.

7. OUTLOOKS: Shown are Craft Outlook & Preservation OutlookBrownies who wish to learn more about subjects, touched on while opening and widening their Windows, may do so through Outlooks (previously called badges). Approximately 5-6 will be done each year as a group in our meetings and on trips. If a Brownie is ambitious and wishes to work on Outlooks at home she may but this is certainly not expected. See the back of her Brownie Program book for requirements for each Outlook and below for info on ***Special Interest ones. Outlook testing nights will be held for those that wish to do extra and they will be indicated on the calendar. PLEASE ONLY BRING IN OUTLOOK WORK ON THESE NIGHTS. Outlooks will be presented as soon after earning them as possible. Please Note: New Brownies will receive their Outlooks after they are enrolled. Most of her Outlooks will be placed on the BACK OF THE SCARFE. There is only room for a few Outlooks on the front and they should be at the very bottom of the scarfe, under the Windows.

8. SPECIAL CRESTS: We take part in various challenges and special events. For some of these she will receive a special crest. These crests can not be worn on the badge scarfe but can be put on camp hats, camp blankets, school bags etc.

9. ADVANCEMENT PIN: Brownies receive an advancement pin when they move on to Girl Guides. They may wear their pin on their Girl Guide Sash.

***Re: SPECIAL INTEREST OUTLOOKS

You won't find listed requirements in the Brownie Book because there are none. These are meant to be flexible and it is up to the Leader to decide if an effort has been made. A Brownie can earn one in the Outdoors (green), one in People (orange) and one in Today & tomorrow (yellow). Each one looks like a treasure chest, just a different colour.

SPECIAL INTEREST IN TODAY AND TOMORROW: Suggestions include Baseball, Bowling, Dancing, Swimming, Collections, Piano playing etc. almost any special hobby/activity will do. Have your daughter bring in any related pictures, badges, trophies etc. and be prepared to discuss in detail what they know about the sport, hobby etc. If the leader feels she needs more work she will suggest what she can do to earn.

SPECIAL INTEREST IN PEOPLE: Suggestions include extended service work with people either through a church or charitable organization (helping others regularly), or a detailed project on a country and the people who live in it, or a project on Seniors or the vision impaired etc. If you are not sure contact a Leader for advice or suggestions.

SPECIAL INTEREST IN THE OUTDOORS: Suggestions include a detailed project on something in the outdoors of interest to the Brownie (eg. pollution, weather, animals, camping, canoeing, fishing, etc.)
