BURNS CONSTRUCTION INC.
Owned by Robert & Martha Burns, this firm has several full-time employees and dozens of subcontracted workers. They build houses, garages, room additions, barns, and commercial buildings on Knotts Island, around Currituck County, and in Virginia. The downside of owning a business is working long hours and answering many phone calls. However, they are gratified to help people move into new homes. The owners sponsor sports because they believe children living in remote areas need extra-curricular activities. Because they have been blessed, Bob and Martha feel a responsibility to invest in their community, especially in the children.
GEORGE VAKOS CONSTRUCTION

ISLAND CUTS
This hair cuttery is operated by Mrs. Annalisa Swoope, who says she likes to style people's hair because it makes them feel better about themselves. She says the worst thing about her job is communication concerning the customer's expectations. She opened her own shop so people wouldn't have to go into town to get their hair done.
ISLAND HAIRWORKS
Mrs. Hicks is the sole owner of this brand new hair/tanning salon, which is open six days a week. She has only one person working for her, being herself. Her salon offers services for the whole family, such as haircuts, tanning, and nailcare. She likes meeting and serving her fellow Islanders, but dislikes having no co-workers. Mrs. Hicks explained, "I love making
folks feel better about themselves."
KNOTTS ISLAND MARKET
The Market was built in 1963; it took four months to finish. According to owner, Dave Dennis, It's the only store for miles, so it is convenient for residents. The store also donates items to local churches and the school.

MOONRISE BAY
"Come sit on our porch in Carolina. It's one of the nicest places in the world. You see, it's where the sky begins. The sun likes to start its daily run here and what a sight it is, to watch it slit the misty horizon with pink and gold, then in silence burst over the Outer Banks across Knotts Island Sound. The hushed beauty, the natural fact of dawn sends a golden arrow across the water straight into your soul. But oh, the nights; pitch black; as silent as can be! Well, that's when it usually happens, a red glow at first and just then the most magnificent honey red moon jumps up...way too big to be real...clean and crisp, pure and mellow, mysterious...just like the wine."
THE PEACH BASKET
This is the fifth year for the roadside stand owned and operated by Don and Sue Austin. They ofer peaches, plums, nectarines, pears, and apples in season- not to mention delicious jams, butters, cobblers, and pies. (adapted from Currituck Chamber of Commerce Business news)
