SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE
The NC State Board of Education/Dept of Public Instruction recognizes schools for outstanding student performance and growth. The official results have been released; they are published at NCPublicSchools.org. Once again, Knotts Island Elementary received recognition as a School of Excellence, meaning 90% or more of students scored at or above grade-level on the End-of-Grade tests. Superintendent Mike Warren presented a banner and a check to students in an assembly in October 2003; he congratulated Faye Freeman, Principal and her staff on a job well done!

MODEL SCHOOL
For the past few years in a row, we achieved Model School status and are striving for it again. To be certified as a Model School in Reading Renaissance and Accelerated Reader, at least 5 teachers must have achieved Model Classroom certification; and no more than 15% of students schoolwide may be classified as at-risk. Teachers must also demonstrate an average of at least 45 minutes daily of "TWI" (reading To students, reading With students, and students reading Independently). Finally, the Principal must certify that Reading Renaissance principles are being applied throughout the school.
