The origin of the name Shaw is uncertain but it may derive from the old Gaelic personal name Sithech, that is first recorded about the 12th century. The Clan Shaw were one of the principal clans of the confederation of Clan Chattan and a sept of the Mackintoshes. The home of Clan Shaw was Rothiemurchus, part of the Mackintosh patrimony and according to tradition was bestowed upon Farquhart Shaw, Shaw "Mor", great-grandson of Angus, 6th Chief of Mackintosh and Eva of Clan Chattan, who lead Clan Chattan to battle on the North Inch Perth in 1396.

FROM NEWNANSVILLE TO ALACHUA
FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Two miles to the north, Newnansville was the seat of Alachua County and center of trade and plantation life in the antebellum period. The church was organized in 1822 in Newnansville, and eventually built a frame building there. Its chief products were corn, cotton, and, after the War Between the States, citrus. In 1856 the courthouse was moved to Gainesville . It further declined when the freeze of 1886 destroyed the citrus. Lack of railway connections caused commercial stagnation. Its population was eventually absorbed by neighboring Alachua. With the rise of the new community of Alachua, and the decline of Newnansville, the Methodists, after lengthy debate, built a white frame church on this site in 1898. In 1910 a fire destroyed the church and parsonage. The congregation used the Baptist facilities until 1913 when this red brick church, with stained glass windows, was completed. The church proudly claims " Oldest Methodist Church in Florida ." And Conye Shaw was one of the few members with the longest membership!

ALACHUA: Upon completion to Gainesville of the Savannah, Florida and Western Railway in May 1884, citizens from the former county seat at Newnansville were among those who moved to the present site of Alachua which was near the railroad. The city is located in a productive farming area. The Bellamy Road , a national highway from St. Augustine to Pensacola authorized in 1824, originally passed near the northeast city boundary. The Alachua post office was established April 30, 1887 and the town was incorporated on April 12, 1903. Alachua continues to serve as an important commercial and agricultural center.

FIRST GAINESVILLE SKIRMISH
The first Civil War gunfire in Gainesville 's streets came on February 15, 1864, when a raiding party of 50 men from the 40th Massachusetts Cavalry entered the City to attempt the capture of two trains. The raid was unproductive, for the Federal troops were met and repulsed by the Second Florida Cavalry at what is now Main Street at University Avenue . Five days later, the main Federal force was defeated at the battle of Olustee, 50 miles to the north.

BATTLE OF GAINESVILLE
A Civil War battle was fought in Gainesville on August 17, 1864, when about 300 occupying Federal Troops were attacked by Florida Cavalry under Captain J.J. Dickison, called " Florida 's most conspicuous soldier." The Federals were driven from the City after a brisk fight and suffered sever casualties during hard pursuit, which ended in victory for the Confederate force.

On 05/15/1862, Emanuel Waters enlisted into the Confederate Army. He was a member of the 8th Regiment. Florida Infantry – Company C. This unit was a part of Perry’s Brigade, which was a part of Anderson ’s Division. Anderson ’s Division, Commanded by Maj. Gen. Richard H. Anderson was under the Third Army Corps, which was commanded by Lt. Gen. Ambrose P. Hill. Hill’s commander was Robert E. Lee.

Emanuel was injured in the right hip area during a skirmish at the "Wilderness" on May 6th, 1864, when his unit was flanked and was ordered to fall back. By all evidence, it was late in the day. He was absent/sick and hospitalized on the last muster roll. The series of battles began on May 4th, 1864, about 18 miles west of Fredericksburg , VA , and lasted three days. When he applied for pension. It describes the incident that injured him, that he was not hit by enemy fire but sustained a serious rupture on the left side and paralysis of the right leg by falling backwards over a pile of logs after being ordered to fall back when the Federal Troops flanked his unit on the left. The paralysis was caused by an injury to his lower back at about the area where the pelvis is joined. He was released from capture April 9th, 1865 in Richmond, VA.

Some of the battles Emanuel's unit was involved in were:
2nd Bull Run (August 28-30, 1862)
Antietam (September 17, 1862)
Fredericksburg (December 13, 1862)
Chancellorsville (May 1-4, 1863
Gettysburg (July 1-3, 1863)
Bristoe Campaign (October 1863)
Bristoe Station (October 14, 1863)
Mine Run Campaign (November -December 1863)
The WILDERNESS (May 5-6, 1864)

Maj. Gen. Ambrose P. Hill

Maj. Gen. Ambrose P. Hill or 'Little Powell', CS Army, commanding Second Army Corps.
Known as a particularly ferocious fighter, Ambrose Hill was promoted to Confederate lieutenant general shortly before his death in 1865. Like many other Virginians, the West Point graduate followed his state onto the battlefield, helping Robert E. Lee defend Richmond against McClellan in 1862 and fighting alongside the legendary "Stonewall" Jackson . Ambrose Powell Hill was a professional soldier, an artilleryman from West Point (1847) who served the Confederacy in the infantry. After joining the army he jumped quickly from lieutenant to colonel of the 13th Virginia . He was at First Manassas, but spent the whole battle in reserve. He rose to command a brigade of Virginians at Williamsburg and Yorktown , the opening stages of the Peninsular Campaign. His performance earned him promotion to Major General (May 26, 1862) and command of a division in the battle at Hanover Court House. After the lull, while Lee took command, he fought brilliantly through the Seven Days Battles, then in Jackson ’s Corps at Cedar Mountain , Second Manassas, and the capture of Harper’s Ferry. On the 17th of September he was busy clearing up the Union forces at Harper’s Ferry, while McClellan was attacking Lee a few miles away at Antietam . Hill force-marched his division all day, arriving just as a Union attack was threatening to sweep through Lee’s weak right flank. Hill’s men had replaced their thread-bare grey coats with new blue ones; Burnside’s men were also expecting reinforcements on their flank. Instead, Hill’s men gave the Rebel yell and broke the Union charge. There was a bit more fighting, but Hill had saved the day. He was present, although not as effective, at Fredericksburg . He had been feuding with Jackson , which didn’t make his position any easier. His division was in the third line of Jackson ’s flank march at Chancellorsville; they saw little action on May 2, but that night Hill was part of Jackson ’s scouting party. When Jackson was wounded Hill helped apply a tourniquet. He then took command of the Corps (he was senior division commander) but only momentarily before he was lightly wounded himself. Without Jackson , Lee revised his command structure. Hill became a Corps commander, of the new III Corps. His subordinate, Henry Heth, nosed into Gettysburg and started the whole battle. Hill was unwell, and didn’t perform well at the battle. The disaster at Bristoe Station can also be laid at his feet: he simply didn’t perform as well as a Corps commander as he had as a division commander. He was in charge but not in command during The Wilderness – Lee knew that Hill wasn’t performing well, so he basically took over. He wasn’t fully fit, and took sick leave, missing Spotsylvania . He got to wear his red battle shirt again at North Anna and Cold Harbor, the last battles of the Overland Campaign as Grant edged around Richmond . Hill was on-again, off-again during the siege of Petersburg , sometimes present, but sometimes unwell. He was shot in the heart by a Union straggler on April 2, 1865. He’d just been at a conference with Lee as the Union were breaking through the defenses west of Petersburg . As Hill rode out to try and bolster the southern forces he didn’t realize how far the breakthrough had gone, and was dropped from his saddle. The veteran of a dozen battles was shot down at Petersburg, just before the war's end.
