Mary's Book Pals

Mary was the chairperson of the New York chapter of BOOK PALS (Performing Artists for Literacy), an organization of working actors who donate time each week reading books to children in New York City public schools.  This volunteer work was something that Mary felt very strongly about.  Her concerns for each child and their reading skills was very important to her.  The children loved her very much, and appreciated her every time she came to read to them.

Donations in her memory can be made to Screen Actors Guild Foundation/Mary Stuart Book Fund,  5757 Wilshire Bldv., Los Angeles, CA 90036, or just by buying a child a book......

January 9, 1998 - Mary Stuart (Meta) received the 1997 Award for Literacy Development in the New York City Public Schools today. It was given to her for her work as director of Book Pals, an organization she founded in 1992.
