Folk Tale Obituary

Lesson 5

Description: Students will write an obituary for a folktale character.

Outcomes: CA Standard: Writing Strategies and Applications 1.0, 2.0

Students will: 

  1. Choose a character from one of the folktales they have read.
  2. Write an essay about the character as though the character had passed away.
  3. Use details to describe the life of the character. The details should be loosely based on the folktale and embelished on by the student. For instance, use a quote from another character in the folktale expressing their opinion on the dead character.
  4. Publish online in the Folktale Gazette.
Subject Areas: Writing
Grade Level Ranges: 6th through 8th grades
Materials: Computer, paper, pencil 

Off-line Activities: Students compose and publish the obituaries.

Online Activities: Publish and read obituaries.

Description of Collaborative Activities: Students will peer edit class obituaries and read other online obituaries.

Assessment: Portfolio based on the Unit rubric
