STAFF  DEVELOPMENT
at
COASTAL  ACADEMY
At Coastal Academy, staff development is a component of our overall focus on school improvement. Primary goals for the current school year are:
1) Reduction of suspensions
2) Maintenance of a conducive learning environment
3) Improvement of academic scores
4) Building of relationships with students in order to foster social-emotional growth.
In pursuit of these goals, Coastal Academy has implemented a policy of continuous staff development and training. We believe that training must be conducted throughout the school year, beginning with intensive instruction.  This should be followed by immediate implementation in the classroom, with feedback and follow-up training as indicated. Summer training sessions often provide the intensive training, with implementation and follow-up occuring during the school year.

Staff Development opportunities scheduled for the 2003-2004 school year include:

---Training and implementation of PSAM (Psychoeducational Student
Achievement Model) to improve student behavior and make the
learning environment more conducive to learning

---Training for new staff and refreshers for veteran staff in the use of
PMAB (Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior)

---Training in Developmental Therapy with a focus on decoding students'
behavior to better understand and respond to underlying issues

---Training in the teaching of reading with a primary focus on research
validated programs such as SRA Reading Mastery , SRA Corrective
Reading and the Edmark Reading Program.

These specific training opportunities provide the staff with a common way of looking at students, a common language and consistent management strategies. The overall focus of the PSAM and PMAB programs is to make the school environment a safe one that is conducive to learning.
