In Saxon days, Somerset was known as Somershire and settled in 1066 after the Battle of Hastings and over time there was established over 1,000 villages. Bath the ancient home to the Roman baths..Glastonbury, King Arthur country and where he is buried.

The village of CHARD in England was originally called CERDIC and today there still remains a number of families in this village with the name of Chard.

The village is about 760 years old as at 1998 and was marked upon Bishop Jocelyn making it a borough called Chard on January 15,1235.

A circular earthwork on the hill to the west of town was probably the site of an Iron Age defended settlement. Aburial urn of this period was found at South Chard and now in the museum.

Records show the conqering Romans constructed a military road along the Windwhistle ridge to the east as part of a road from Axmouth to Lincoln. They also built an estate house at South Chard. In history two Chards were mentioned just before the Norman conquest .

These were South Chard and Old Town Chard next to where the Parish Church now stands.

CHARD MANOR....The first written reference to the Chard Manor came in 1065 when it was possessed by Bishop Giso of Bath

The name (Cerden in the document) infers rough ground and this may have been the large surrounding area of commonland or the abundant local flinty stone (chert), so durable for building but a curse to cultivation.

Giso was a Freanchman from Lorraine and retained the Chard Manor at the time when William

of Normandy conquered England.

It was a large but not reckoned as a rich Manor when surveyed for the Doomsday Book of 1086.

CHARD BOROUGH....A century and a half later, its then owner, Bishop Jocelyn, took steps to improve the value of the Manor by founding a borough by a vharter dated January 15,1235. This charter offered to those willing to build 52 "burgages" of one acre each, for a rent of 12 pence payable to the Bishop yearly. The borough boundaries remained the same for the nect 600 years.

Chard prospered and by 1300 was important enough to send two members to the King's Parliament, a costly privilage that soon ceased.
