At the title screen wait for the words press start to appear and then enter the following code:C left, C down, C right, C up, C left , C right, C down. With this code entered go to the pilot select screen and you'll find the new character "Mao Mao".
Another way to aquire "Mao Mao" is to continue more than three times in the Tokyo stage.

Clear the "Tokyo" stage, "Pacific ocean" stage and the "Air battle" stage in under 1,400 seconds in order to access a desert stage.
If you cleared the desert stage while it's still light you'll go on to the "Shuttle defence" stage.
If you've cleared the "Air landing" stage and "Shuttel defence" stage you will go on to the "Goliath" defence after the "Fortress" stage.
If you've cleared the "Goliath" defence you'll access the bonus stage "Space" after the "Antarctic ocean" and "Ice cave" levels.

Extra battle stages
At the main menu(The one that says Adventure, battle, custom, and options) tap the start button repeatedly until you hear a chime the signals the code has been entered correctly. When you go to stage select you will find there are four new stages, "In the gutter", "Sea Sick", "Blizzard Battle", and "Lost at Sea".

!!Warning!!

This is literaly a ludicrously hard code to enter. You have to press start in an insane amount of speed thats not humanly possible. I've tried entering this code a million times before and I can't get it to work. Even if you did get it to work you finger would hurt so badly you couldn't play. Take my advise and follow the to alternatives ways to get it below.

Earning the stages
The not so excruciating yet still excruciating way to get the stages is to beat the game on normal mode to get "In the gutter" and "Sea Sick", and then beat it on hard mode to get "Blizzard Batlle" and "Lost at Sea".

The cheap way
Easy way to get all the stages is to buy a gameshark controller, plug it in, go to the main menu, and press the slow motion button once untill you hear a chime, then press the button again to deactivate the button, go to battle mode and viola, instant stages. Thats how I entered the code.
